Tamed Multi Species Finch Planted Aviary

Post by mondo » Sun Jan 04, 2015 11:34 am

Found this person in instagram:
PORKYPARKY <- try browsing him

he lives in Thailand, and apparently owns an amazing lovely aviary
full of beautiful finches and some ground birds, and its planted!
the best part is that all his birds are tame! they can be seen feeding on his palm or below him.

I want to share these inspiring pictures, to let people know and to remind myself there's always hope in taming the finches you own. they won't be skittish forever and will someday be yours
I've invited him to join the forum but he hasn't answered yet (never answered apparently... maybe not very good in english...) so on behalf of him I'll post here respectfully

That is very cool! It is possible to tame them, it just takes lots of time and patience. Would be so cool to have all my birds eat out of my hand like that

I imagine it's much easier in a larger space where the birds feel like they can get away from you if they feel nervous or threatened. If you sit patiently long enough with them each day with food as a reward I'm sure within weeks you could get them to eat from your hand.

Birds and Blooms used to actually sell a stand up human shaped cut out. It was designed for you to put a particular shirt and pants on it. one of the hands was outstretched and you placed seed in it. Once the birds became comfortable with the fake you, you changed into a matching outfit and went and stood out their instead. Eventually the birds would come to you regardless of what you wore in the yard to beg seeds off you if the feeders got low or they were particularly friendly like chickadees.

OH MY GOODNESS! that's so cool!!! I should try something like that :D
perhaps we can use a mannequin! yep, or if that's too expensive we could go to a printing company for their help ^^ so its like taming without the owner having to spend many hours in the aviary

Colt
ah yes, he finally answered my question
his aviary is 4m x 3,5m x 2,5m. I think 2,5 is the height... yup!
so I guess I'll just make something that spacious in the future! maybe not as big as his but enough to house multi finches ^^

I would literally never get anything done. I'd just be sitting out there with the birds all day.

I have some finches that come to me every time I enter the bird room. They were hand fed from 2 weeks old until weaning last year, but they still know me and talk to me and want my attention. I got a lovebird last summer who was not tame, but I kept working daily to say hello and talk to him and offer a treat sometimes. I still talk to him every morning and evening and make eye contact. Now, he doesn't run away, but he won't come to my hand yet. We'll see. I sure wish all my finches were hand tamed. What fun! [-o<

It's not so much the handfeeding that makes them tame as the time you spend with them. Not to mention handfeeding is not an easy task. I've handfed many chicks and they all forget about me once they wean and get into the flock. They are friendlier but definitely not finger tame.
