I just noticed the pretty, girly boxes that you picked for your mealies. Love them!
In fact, they gave me a chuckle as that's the sort of box you'd use to store your hair bows or scrapbooking supplies. So I LOVE that you're growing mealworms in them!

Colt – have you tried crushing up the dry mealies? That's what I do. Nobody will eat mealworms intact (dead or alive). I have to crush them up into a powder.

Zebrafincher

The reason I went over to the WORM DARK SIDE, Is because some of the waxbills will not even consider breeding without them. Then I discovered, that everybody appreciates these delicious, nutritious yummies.

I know that it's bleh blah yuck, but you get used to it. You can btw, get freeze dried wormies and smash them into bits. Your guys will love them.

Colt
Hi Colt.

Sorry, didn't notice your question earlier. My attention was taken by my Mighty Meal-wormliness (or whatever it was :-D)

Regarding Gouldians (not the gladiator mutation) and mealworms. Initially, it was a no go. They would eat the freeze dried ones, which I crush and offer. Then , being in a flight with Stars and Parrot Finches, the Weaned toddlers decided to try them, when they saw the other species eating them. Next thing, the Societies were trying them. Then lo and behold, the adult Gouldis were going after them as well. Now we have 'worm tug of war' games, which is a new sport (which might appear in the next bird Olympics).

MariusStegmann

 Marius, tell me it isn't so!!!

Do they really fly???? I was planning on keeping covers with air holes on my boxes. The very thought of those things sailing around the house, makes the hairs on my arms stand at attention.

Those covers are staying on until anything that is black in these boxes is motionless for several days.

Glad you like the boxes. Had to find something cute to mask the ugh beetles that will reside in them in due time. :-D

Oh Mia, that's too much. Haha

And all my other birds love the live ones. But the Gouldians throw them out and let them grow up in the tray under the papers... :YMSICK:

I think they're an acquired taste. Once they try them, they learn to love them . Try puting your Gouldian weans, with a species that like the mealies, and they'll learn to eat them too. *Speaking of which, I'll have to pop to the Pet Shop tomorrow and get more. They are going like hot cakes. Blah!!!

Hi Sally, my great worm mentor....

Is this a dead worm, or one heading down the road to pupae-dome?

It's too blurry to be sure, but looks like a dead worm to me. The pupa are shaped differently, wider at one end than the other (don't ask me which end is which!). Though the pupa don't move, if you touch one it will often jerk.

Sally

Thanks, I thought they were little corpses as well. The pupae are usually white, these are not. So that's that then.

I gave my little Wonder Worm Farm Worms, some carrots and potatoes, hopefully they'll eat and grow into the magnificent beasts that I'm expecting.

LOL! Now I know what the poopies look like. I just wasn't sure if this was one stage before the pupae stage.

Sally

Hi Oh Great Worm Mentor.

How often should I feed the Magnificent Beasts?
Should I remove what's left of the old food, before offering new?
Thanks.

lovezebs I usually leave the veggies in until there isn't too much left, or it is pretty dried up, then I take that out and put in fresh. Don't put in too many veggies at once.
