My newest clutch at five days old. Here is a common scene for many of us.

And some of the recent fledges. They all look pretty much alike. The one that has lots of black and acouple of red head feathers would not cooperate for the camera, so I gave up. These are the clear shots of three of the five:

Thanks!

Earlier tonight I noticed one of the babies had its first purple chest feather. I can't wait to watch them color up. This is my first clutch of gouldians. :YMDAYDREAM:

I'm new to baby birdies...

What are those yellowish bulges in between the head and wings?

KarenB

They are lovely Karen. Congratulations.
Are the infants in the first picture, the grown up toddlers in the other pictures? What I mean, is it the same clutch?

jebediah, The large yellow bulges there are their crops, which is a short of storage for food until it begins to pass thru to their stomach for digestion. The yolk sac is actually present low on the abdomen for the first two to three days of life and sustains them initially. Once the yolk is absorbed by their body, they must then be fed into their crop, lest they starve.

If you look closely, you can see what the parents have been feeding them. The yellow blobs inside are seeds and eggfood, and the green blobs are leafy greens.

Congrats on the babies. :) My really good pair decided to boot two of their chicks out into the (empty) bath this morning. I caught the Society finches in there trying to feed them. Silly birds. I warmed them up and popped them back in the nest. Hope there are no more repeats when I get home from class.
