I needed to buy a new nest for my Society finches as my very first clutch of Society's fledged (all five of them!) in November, and their nest was pretty much the most appalling thing I've ever seen. Anyway, I stopped by my local pet shop and got me a giant finch nest (Good idea? I haven't put it in. I am not opposed to having a couple more.), and a few treats. My mother and I stopped to check out the new arrivals in the aviary, and there was nothing we were fond of in the Society finch cage. Still, we looked around the other cages and omg there she was, a beautiful all white (probably white pied

) Zebra. Upon further inspection we realized she had a bit of a gimp. I asked an associate about it, and wondered if we would still purchase her (No, at this time I was not thinking about the fact that I own absolutely no other Zebras.

), and turns out they were willing to give her away. I used to work at this pet store, and have received free birds in the past, but I was not expecting that. We brought her home, and I checked out her leg. It really just seems that it's a little bruised from bad handling, or from getting her to the pet store in the first place from wherever. Either way, she is slowly beginning to use it today, and that is from having her overnight. I will take better pics of her little leg if you guys wanna see it closer. Maybe some of you have some suggestions on speeding up the healing process? I have already upped her calcium intake, and have provided some fVite from the Lady Gouldian finch website.
Let me backtrack a bit. I house seven Society finches in a fairly small 15 x 15 x 17 cage, which I am about to switch out for a large flight cage I am waiting to receive through the mail. The mother, a chocolate pied, suffered an injury on her left leg. Thankfully she survived, but the way in which the vet bandaged up her leg...it didn't heal correctly. No worries, she is doing just fine. I am amazed at her recovery, and I am happy to have her with us today.
I am hoping I won't have to drop 200 bucks (I'm out of my mind) to get this little Zebra's leg fixed up as well. It really doesn't look bad, but I am open to any suggestions. It's definitely not broken, and healing pretty quickly as I said before. Jeeze, this is turning out to be a long first post.
I plan on keeping the little Zebra (she is female from what I have observed) in the same cage unless I have a pretty good reason not to. I have read quite a bit on the internet as well as on this forum about hybrids, and the damage they pose to the more expensive, "hard to find" varieties of finches, but I really don't see any harm in infertile hybrid offspring from the more common species that I would keep for myself. If all else fails, the new cage will have two stories which I can separate the species from one another if need be.
I have seen these hybrid Society x Zebra finch in pictures though, and I must say I am intrigued.

So far they have all accepted the little white bird, so much that I have caught a few of the younger birds grooming her and whatnot. No pecking yet!
I'll attach some pics so you guys can see my little pied beauties. Please excuse the poop....
