Something strange happened to me yesterday.

Post by guhloreea » Sun Jan 04, 2015 8:06 pm

I needed to buy a new nest for my Society finches as my very first clutch of Society's fledged (all five of them!) in November, and their nest was pretty much the most appalling thing I've ever seen. Anyway, I stopped by my local pet shop and got me a giant finch nest (Good idea? I haven't put it in. I am not opposed to having a couple more.), and a few treats. My mother and I stopped to check out the new arrivals in the aviary, and there was nothing we were fond of in the Society finch cage. Still, we looked around the other cages and omg there she was, a beautiful all white (probably white pied  ) Zebra. Upon further inspection we realized she had a bit of a gimp. I asked an associate about it, and wondered if we would still purchase her (No, at this time I was not thinking about the fact that I own absolutely no other Zebras. ), and turns out they were willing to give her away. I used to work at this pet store, and have received free birds in the past, but I was not expecting that. We brought her home, and I checked out her leg. It really just seems that it's a little bruised from bad handling, or from getting her to the pet store in the first place from wherever. Either way, she is slowly beginning to use it today, and that is from having her overnight. I will take better pics of her little leg if you guys wanna see it closer. Maybe some of you have some suggestions on speeding up the healing process? I have already upped her calcium intake, and have provided some fVite from the Lady Gouldian finch website.

Let me backtrack a bit. I house seven Society finches in a fairly small 15 x 15 x 17 cage, which I am about to switch out for a large flight cage I am waiting to receive through the mail. The mother, a chocolate pied, suffered an injury on her left leg. Thankfully she survived, but the way in which the vet bandaged up her leg...it didn't heal correctly. No worries, she is doing just fine. I am amazed at her recovery, and I am happy to have her with us today. I am hoping I won't have to drop 200 bucks (I'm out of my mind) to get this little Zebra's leg fixed up as well. It really doesn't look bad, but I am open to any suggestions. It's definitely not broken, and healing pretty quickly as I said before. Jeeze, this is turning out to be a long first post.

I plan on keeping the little Zebra (she is female from what I have observed) in the same cage unless I have a pretty good reason not to. I have read quite a bit on the internet as well as on this forum about hybrids, and the damage they pose to the more expensive, "hard to find" varieties of finches, but I really don't see any harm in infertile hybrid offspring from the more common species that I would keep for myself. If all else fails, the new cage will have two stories which I can separate the species from one another if need be. I have seen these hybrid Society x Zebra finch in pictures though, and I must say I am intrigued. :D  [-X [-o< So far they have all accepted the little white bird, so much that I have caught a few of the younger birds grooming her and whatnot. No pecking yet!

I'll attach some pics so you guys can see my little pied beauties. Please excuse the poop.... :P

Glad you are getting a bigger cage for your birds, they will be so much healthier for it. I wouldn't bother seeing a vet about this little hen's leg at this time, it may be something that will heal on its own. Once you get the larger cage, you can use this smaller cage as a hospital cage.

Hey there.

Your Socies are super cute. With a mix of male/female, you really have to watch for inbreeding. These guys have no problems with breeding with brothers or sisters, or parents, which is definitely something you don't want. Not just because it's icky,(which it is) but due to major health broblems which will crop up.

Regarding new flight cage: Great idea!!! Your birds will absolutely love it.

Now down to little Gimples (Zebra). I have a male Socie (Gimpy) who has a twisted leg, never even slows him down. Also one male Zebra (Zazu), with a twisted toe, you'd never know it.

As in regards to the gender of little one. Is it my imagination, or is there a hint of colour on the cheek area? It could be just a shadow, or my eyes. Could we have a closer look of face?

As for breeding Zebbie and Socie....... not recommended really, but they are your birds and your decision.

Enjoy your bird kids and the new flight cage when it arrived.

Aw, I'm so glad you got the gimpy bird.
That would've been my choice too!

To speed healing, there are a few things you can do:
- get a heated perch. The heat dilates blood vessels and results in more circulation and more nutrients/oxygen to the injured area. The heat also soothes the chronic aching that's typical of a break or serious injury. It also helps reduce the fluffing that you're seeing in her.

- I'd give her a heat lamp. Just a normal gooseneck desk lamp or clip on lamp with a normal bulb (non florescent, as florescents don't get hot) 40-60 watts. She'll spend less energy on heating herself and more energy on healing and you won't see that fluffing.

- I'd give lots of calcium and protein. Eggs fit the bill very nicely for this. Calcium for bone calcification and protein to build soft tissues. A nice multivitamin also helps.

That should do it!
I've got a gimpy little gouldian with a break that healed wrong and she gets around just fine. I was worried she'd get caught up but no troubles so far.

Yeah, I wish I had gotten it sooner. The holidays really made a dent in my savings, but I'm glad the cage is finally coming in. I have already gotten new homes for four of the Society offspring, I am just waiting on my brother and my sister in law to get settled as they just moved in state; they will be taking two. The other two will go to my mother's best friend, and that should leave quite a bit of leg room for the birds in the new cage.

Yes, I am absolutely with you on the inbreeding thing. I've already got homes lined up for four of the babies. The last thing I want to happen is an unhealthy clutch. These guys are probably inbred as it is; I got them from a pet store. No show birds here, but I adore them. 8)

I see now that leg breaks in birds is pretty common. Haha I will be calling her Gimples if she is female. I'll get you a few more pics, cuz you've got me wondering about her sex now. lol

Hybridizing is a bad idea, but I'm not too concerned about it happening. I am actually considering pulling the nest and keeping my flock small after I get the new cage anyway. I don't sell my birds or anything, and I would feel irresponsible having a crowded cage again. Just a thought.

Thought I replied to this.
I have already upped her calcium, but is there a good multivitamin I can get in store anywhere? I haven't been able to find one I trust. That stuff you find at PetSmart is a joke to me, but I suppose I can try there again. I will probably resort to buying it online. I'll make sure to get that lamp for her by tomorrow morning. Thanks for your help! Sorry to hear about your Gouldian. They are such pretty birds, its really such a shame. I cried when my little Society broke hers. I was convinced she would die from the shock.

guhloreea -- It's tough to find a good multivitamin in a mainstream pet store. Most are pretty crappy and almost none contain calcium.

There's a fairly good powder supplement called Missing Link, which has lots of the nutrients that many birds are often deficient in. But it's not a multivitamin per se and not very complete.

I used to combine that with a multivitamin from Nekton and certain food items to ensure a balanced diet.

But a few years ago, I started using Dr. Marshall's and Morningbird products and haven't gone back. You've got to order them online, but they're great supplements. The Feather Fast supplement that Morningbird makes is very balanced and good for younger birds and molting birds.
