2014 Youngsters

Hi All

I had to thin out some of my 2014 Youngsters and introduce some new blood into my Aviaries. I sold 14 Zebra's and 5 Canaries and got a good deal on 5 pairs of Gouldians @ R300 a pair which is around 25 Dollars a pair. I want to make 2015 the Year of the Gouldian for me and see what happens, this will mean a couple of upgrades to my Aviary but I am looking forward to it.

RH PB GB males and hens, if your gouldians don't have some other hidden genes...Surprises are always fun

You will get RH.PB.Gb hens and males. The males will also be /BH (split to BH)

That is nice Steve. I got my first gouldians about 2 months ago from Rox, and already have 1 pair with 5 chicks. Red heads are always dominant. You must perhaps think of using the finchbreeders database. (If you are not already using it) If you put in your pairs, you can use the genetic forecaster and see what chicks you can expect.

Congratulations on new Gouldians. WOW!!! $25.00 a pair???? What a price!

Here, when you buy from breeders, you can expect to pay between $75.00 to over a $100.00 per bird. In the Pet Shops, you will pay $140.00 and up per bird. If I saw pairs for $25.00each, I would be like a starving woman in an all you can eat restaurant......Give me 2 of these, and 2 of those, and 4 of these ones over here, oh and...... lol.

It is not really a fair indication of bird prices to convert Rand to Dollar like that. It is still a lot of money for us. Steve was fortunate to be able to buy his birds at wholesale prices. Petshops buy in gouldians for R150 per bird. They pay R100 for Shafttails, R100 for Diamonds, R40 per canary, R20 per bengalese and R10 for Zebras. The petshop sometimes double or triple these prices when they sell. I am sure that you would love to pay less than $10 for a diamond firetail. I think that the prices are market related, for instance people sell blue split gouldians for R1500 per pair, because there is a big demand for it.

Afrikaans speaking South Africans love to eat meat. Most have what we call "Braairooms" - a room that we use to have a barbecue. When we go and work overseas, though we earn a lot of money if you convert it to Rand, we can't afford to buy a lot of meat.

@MariusStegmann, the first time I heard of bird-rooms was on this forum and it seems big overseas, we have Braairooms they have Birdrooms lol.

On a serious note I think that prices vary also from the Cape, I am getting R35 for Zebra's and R125 for Canaries.

How do I join the finchbreeders database?

Our 13th Annual Gouldian Auction takes place on 07 Feb, it will be my first bird auction and I am super excited, I will be looking for different Gouldians to add to my collection. I will take some photo's to share.

steve Yes, the prices differ, most times they would not even take my zebras for free. That is why I got rid of them, and I had some beautiful colour variations. Yes, it was a bit strange to hear of bird rooms. What is even stranger is that as I understand it, sometimes these birds have their own cages inside the bird room. They get fly-timeshare and they go back to their cage and the next lot gets to fly around in the birdroom.

It is for free and you can set it up to show your birds as little icons in your signature in finchforum and the aussie finchforum. You have seen the whole lot of birds in my signature? You can set pairs and the dates eggs were laid, hatched and when the birds fledged etc. As soon as you have set up a pair, you can then use the genetic forecaster.
