Quarantine a Canary

So I got 2 lizard canaries today and I will put them in a different room from my other birds (Gouldian Finches) for Quarantine reasons.

I want to see if I can use the same quarantine technique that I used for my Gouldians.

This is my quarantine regime - for 4 to 6 weeks (all mixed with water):

6 days of meds for Coccidiosis, Trichomoniasis and intestinal tract infections,
6 days plain water
(on the 3rd day of the plain water I add a drop of Scatt on the bird)
6 days of meds for Salmonella
6 days water

Do you think this is ok for a Canary? Should I also add meds against Canker?

I would treat with Ivermectin. This is good for air sac mites and Scaley leg/Scaley face mites, which are both very common in canaries. Treatment is 1 drop (spot on the skin on the back of the canary's neck) every 2 weeks, for a total of 3 applications. Ex. 1st dose 1/25, 2nd dose 1/8, 3rd dose 1/22. I also use worm away to treat for worms. My avian vet recommends a 90 day quarantine. This gives you plenty of time to spread out the medications for your new birds.

I thought Scatt is ivermectin?

jonvill...Actually, Scatt is Moxydectin. My avian vet recommends using Ivermectin and putting it directly on to the bird...not in the drinking/bath water. Spot on treatment 1x is not enough to treat mites, due to their life cycle. Just letting vellad know what my Dr said...but of coarse, each person will do what they feel is best for their birds

Ivermectin is only active for hours, so like Ginene mentioned, needs to be applied multiple times. Scatt is active for 21 days, the life cycle of ASM.

That's so interesting, Debbie! I wonder why my avian vet prefers ivermectin to Scatt? It would have been much easier to treat for Scaley Leg if I only had to catch my birds for 2 applications, rather than 3.

I wish I could still get Scatt but unfortunately it hasn't been legally available for sale here for a number of years, despite it being made by an Australian company. I much prefer it to Ivermectin, which works, but requires more applications.
