Is This Youngster Going to be a White Breast?

Post by lovezebs » Fri Feb 13, 2015 4:01 pm

My first Gouldian clutch from Tiny and Sharra, are molting and starting to show their colours. I noticed, that one of them, is showing pure white in the breast area.
Could our Gouldian folk, take a look for me, and tell me if he/she looks like it might come up with a white instead of a purple breast?

That youngster's going to be a white breast, for sure.

Hi Elana - yes, definitely a white breast! Congratulations. I know you've been wanting one for a while. Now you will have a 'home-made' one. The white breasts have been my favorite for several years now.

Hi Brian.

I'm not so sure how great this kid looks , all fluffed up and molting, but thanks for saying so :-). Give this one another month or so , and hopefully will really look great (we hope).

I really hope so. I really like the white breasts, so getting a surprise one, is a real bonus. :-)

Hi Iso.

YAY! Yes, I have wanted a white breast, so as mentioned above, this 'home made' surprise one, is a real bonus. I guess that means that either Tiny or Sharra, are split to something or another (mumbo jumbo genetics :-D ) as far as I understand it (?)

I'd say a white breast for sure!

I've found that you can't tell what the color will be unless they're born with traces of it like this guy.
I found that the ones who fledge with yellow bellies are male.
I've never seen one fledge with a white chest, but it seems pretty definitive for your little guy!

You know what's funny? I really wanted a white breast, but I wasn't sure if my male was split to white. (He's purple.)

Well, careful what you wish for because I got all 4 babies with white chests! LOL Now I wish I'd had at least one with purple, but that's okay. They're lovely nonetheless!

Yes, this young gouldian is going to be a white breast. It looks like a hen to me because yellow color on her belly is not bright.
I love Gouldian Finches.

Hi Mia.
These guys fledged quite some time ago. This is the first clutch, who fledged on November 19th, 2014. They have just been taking their sweet time to start molting.

So it would appear, that everyone is voting on white breast. I do hope so, as it would seem, that the other clutch sibs, are going to be purple breasted (?) I don't know what the head colours are going to be at this point. But wouldn't it be sweet, if 'white chest', grows an orange head (which is one of my favorite mutations) ? :-)

This means both parents are split for white, so you will get more white breasts in the future.

One of mine that I thought was going to be white breast may be lavender or very very light purple or whatever they call it. Seems like the more feathers that come in on the breast, I am seeing a hint of color. I'm getting impatient waiting for all the feathers to come in, though. And right now my babies look like pin cushions. Poor things.

KarenB

Thanks Karen.

So if I save one of my white breasted baby girls, and breed her to my Jaxom (when she comes of age), they might present me with orange headed /white breasted/ green backed babies???

That would be super :-).

KarenB - I once bought a male yellow back, red head I thought was going to be a white breast. But when he matured his breast was a pale pink (and for some reason I just didn't like that color combination). So much of it is personal preference.

Elana - I'm with you as far as favorite color combinations go. The two males I kept when I decided to stop breeding gouldians are both white breast, green back, but one is an orange head the other a red head. They look spectacular side by side.

Hi Iso.
I bet they look spectacular together.

By the way, Iso, why did you stop breeding Gouldians?
