lovezebs - Elana, it's hard to explain. I had been breeding them for about five years and sometimes it would take the fledglings a very long time (6 to 9 months) to fully color. It seemed to depend on which time of year they hatched (and now I can't even remember what the problematic season was). Don't get me wrong, there was nothing wrong with them, they were very healthy, just looked mousy for a long time before they started coloring up. I never liked my aviary too crowded. All my birds seem to do a lot better with plenty of space to just be themselves. So then I sometimes had a bunch of younger and older fledglings I was waiting for to color up.
When I found out strawberries (which I had always wanted) were now available and those lovely black-crowned waxbills, too, I thought it was time to try something new.

Completely understandable.
I'm still at a stage, where I fall in love with different species. I see them, I want them. The kid in the candy shop syndrome, lol.

However, I can see a time, when Zebras might fall by the wayside. Sometimes I'm almost there, and then I look at them, and I know I'm not there yet.

Gouldians fascinate me with their beauty and almost endless possibilities of different combinations. Plus, I really do like their personalities. So I can see myself sticking with them for a while.

I really do like the tiny wax bills as well, but have a bad feeing about breeding them. For some reason (and I might be wrong), I keep thinking that I won't have much luck there. Possibly, because I don't have as much space and privacy, as most of them need. However, they may yet surprise me.

As to the rest of the crew, I don't know yet. The Canary girls, are laying. The Stars and the RH Parrots, are mating like crazy rabbits, just for fun. The Societies are just sweet. The other odds and ends... I don't know yet. I would like to try my hand with the Cordon Bleus (if I can ever find some reasonably priced boys), but from what I hear, they are really difficult as well....

Ah well, we shall see what the future brings.

For now, I'm just happy that one of my teenagers might be a white breast. :-)

I'd say the juvenile is also White-breasted.

Remind me what colors Tiny and Sharra are?

Thank you Sen.
This baby will definitely stay with me, and hopefully we will have more white breasts in the future.
I am hoping to get Orange head/White breast/Green backs, I love that combination. When she grows up, I want to breed her to my Orange head/Purple breast/Green back, boy (Jaxom). I was just thinking about shopping for a white breasted female for him, and here is one right in my house :-).

~Elana~

P.S. Here's a picture of Jaxom.

Well Jaxom and Sharra are both definitely RH (Red-headed) PB/WB (Visually Purple-breasted but split to White-breasted) and GB (Green-backed. In order for you to get and YH (Yellow, or Orange-headed) birds they'd both need to be RH/YH.

Colt

Did you mean Tiny and Sharra, Colt? They are the parents of this (hopefully) white breasted youngster.

Regarding Jaxom, he is the Orange headed fella in the bottom picture. When 'white breast' grows up, I was thinking of breeding her and Jaxom, to see what we get (?).

I would absolutely love to get an orange headed/white breast. I think they are quite lovely.

I'm posting pictures below, of the three clutch mates of 'white breast. Tell me what you think the colours will be. The chubby one is a male for sure, he sings. The other two, not sure yet.

He has a cool name 8) I think if Jaxom pair with 'white breast' ,their children may be Red head /Purple breast, just like this ↓
1.JPG
Only on this condition will be Orange head/Purple breast ,the probability is 1/4, like this ↓

Thanks for the genetic charts Sen. I find Gouldian genetics extremely confusing. When I start trying to figure them out, I feel like my brain is going to explode. :-D

So, if I want this (pictures below), what do I need to do?

By the way, it looks like Baby 'white breast', might have a black head, but not 100% percent sure yet.
I have the opportunity to get a red head/ white breast/yellow back male, would that help with anything?

Cross the top male onto the WB juvenile hen you have and you'll get all visually GB birds or sfGB in the case of some males. White-breasts and purple breasts. Head color is a gamble until you know what she'll molt in as.

Colt
And here we go.... my brain is starting to go off in circles and I'm going cross eyed. 8-}

Colt, my friend... WHICH TOP MALE?

The two picts right above here, are just examples of the results I would eventually like to get.

The only other male that I have available at the moment (who is not related), is Jaxom.

I can get my hands on a 'rh/wb/yb' male (my Pet Shop has two available). If I buy him, breed him with 'Baby White Breast', what would I end up with?

~X( ~Elana~ ~X(

P.S. The birds in the Pet Shop, look like this next picture more or less...

Man, those yellow birds sure are pretty. I find it interesting they can keep the red head and still have the yellow backs.

Well, Elana, yeah, genetics is not easy, but really useful, it will be helpful to you :)
If you want yellow head/yellow back/white breast, take Jaxom pair with the red head/yellow back/white breast, you'll get pale green back baby, take the pale green pair with a female yellow head/green bake/white breast, then there will be the two types you want in their babies, needs two generation to achieve.
