Heartbroken for my birdie....

This morning when I was about to feed the birds, I found one of my female birdie was hanging on a string, she died already, I raised her and saw her grow into adult from egg.... I don't know where the string come from, I NEVE put string to my cages or birdhouse. Must be my mom who accidentally or placed one inside when tight the veggies few days ago, which this cause disaster for my birds. I saw her suffered too much and bleeding from neck area because that's where it got tight up and hang her in the air sigh. I found out it's the bird I tried tame her before when she was fledgling stage 3 years ago, I had her for 3 years and now no more seeing her.


Her mate was crying by singing whole morning today, I am sure he is calling her but I feel sad, is he going to stress out these days? Since he play and with her 3 years ago too I don't want to hear him crying and calling her with singing voice all the time, he usually sing only when he is happy with his mate- the one just died this morning. Any suggestions I can do? Should I put him into hospital cage? There are other birds around him but he doesn't seem interest playing with them but fly from one perch to other calling his mate so bad. Any ideas in this situation that I can do to help him? I fee bad mydelf lost my lovely bird just because it was accident. Must just happened last nite when everybody asleep or early this morning since the blood on her chest and tummy area still red and some dried out already, sigh I can't think more now, I feel like my love one from family died or something, so heavy inside even just little bird any advices would be great, thank you so much in advance...

PS: I don't want post her pic when and how she died when hang with string and bloody on her tummy, don't want make people feel sick and sad about her. So I rather just write in words here.

By the way the string was tied on her neck, which caused no more hair on her neck and tummy area too:( I feel horrible inside.

So sorry to hear about your poor little bird. It is very difficult, but sometimes accidents do happen, and it's really nobody's fault.

Tell your Mom not to put any kind of string, yarn or wool in the cage. Better to use something like a clothes pin, or just stick your vegetables between the cage bars, or place on a plate at the bottom of the cage.

As to your bird's mate. There is really not much you can do. In time he'll forget, and then be ready to accept another mate. As long as he has some other birds for company, he should be alright in time.

Again I want to say how sorry I am for your loss. It's obvious that you love your birds very much.

HI Elana, thank you so much for your kindness words and comfort words. I will do my best not let my mom do some foolish things like this again in the future, since I love my zebras so much and still feel sorrowful for her.... I will let the rest of my 30 + zebras to stay healthy and of course hope no more accident again.

I also looking for some plants, since I put my aviary indoor so maybe fake one is all I can get now since I don't want them to tear the leaves apart or kill the plants. I also heard about some fake plants will hurt them especially from the sharp area such as the root or branches, any ideas what plants I should put in? Other reason is because they fighting constantly since some pairs doesn't want other pairs to fight, really don't want them torture each other and hissing like that daily. David - Oh I'm so sorry.
It's especially hard when it's a bird whom you've raised yourself. There's something so incredibly special about watching a creature grow up.

If you have another hen whom you could put in with the male, I would. That will give him something new to focus on. It changes the dynamics of the situation a bit and makes his mate's absence a bit less noticeable. (Though I wouldn't move the male. I'd leave him where he is; don't want to stress him more.)

I just went through pulling fine strings out of a nest. They came from one of the cockatiels' plucking toys that fell on top of the cage. Too short and easy to break for an adult to have any problems, but problematic enough for a baby to get caught up. So I'm glad I caught it. Strings can be a real problem. Fabrics too.

Some fake plants will definitely help improve aesthetics and reduce aggression by breaking up some of the space.
The area where the branches meet and form a "v" can create a spot where they can get a foot caught, so I put the vines outside the cage and pop the leaves through into the cage.


I also get the little bouquets/bundles of fake foliage and pop them in there as well. (Need to go shopping for some new ones tomorrow in fact!)

Thanks for your advice about the plant, I will think carefully before put them in. Glad you caught it in time pulled the string out, I really have to be careful too, not just blame at my mom for now, but even those string or fabrics fell on floor like outside the aviary are dangerous too. In case if the male especially will try to get them though the cage bar, which can cause fatal for any birds inside the same cage or aviary.

I have another 30+ birds inside the aviary, some of them paired up and few males left alone (which they are single)but female all paired up already with other males, so I can't put another mate for him yet since he must missed the one do much now, need time to heal. I have more male than female in the aviary which is the problem especially some aggressive ones trying to fight for the female caused a lot of problems for their mates..

I also think about the tree type of shrub or plants, rather then few leaves doesn't help them stop fight. I look for something can let them hide easily not so visible, because currently I have similar plants like yours in my aviary, but doesn't help when comes with fighting and hissing others

I am so sorry this has happened to your bird. How could she have gotten it tied around her neck? You must be devastated. They are like family. It is good that you have so many other birds to take your mind off of it a little. Maybe you could get some more females and put one with the male so he won't be so lonely. Time will help you both heal. My thoughts are with you.

Sorry about your loss...but please don't be too hard on your mother she meant well.Mothers can bare the thought that they caused their children pain

David I am sooo Sorry. I can't imagine how you must be feeling, I'm at work right now, and your post makes me want to go home and see my babies.... You must be heartbroken. But like someone said before me, time will help you heal a little. Just keep an eye on her mate, if you have to give him a little bit of extra attention, or extra treats, then so be it. He deserves it for a few days, until he can get into the swing of things being alone. Again, I'm so sorry, you and your birds are in my thoughts and prayers

I feel so touch seeing your words. I did offered my birdies especially him, for special treats, veggies and eggs. I really hope he can try to sooth the wound himself too, how much he in love with the female for 3 years, which is a long time for a bird... He even flew from corner to corner to calling her, and sing to me like he thought I was hiding her from him oh my god, heart so heavy now when I think of how she died yesterday morning, seem a long time already even not seeing her for one day but when I think people who are so supportive here in the forum, I keep telling myself look forward to the bright side, I will get this though and the birdie boy too together. Thanks again for your great advices and kindness words.

At the same time I am looking for some artificial plants for my finches, because other birds are fighting constantly even when see other nearby, hope you have some ideas for what to do. I current using some thin leaves with 5 feet long, but not thick enough since I need tree-style like for them because have 30+ more birds in the aviary, these thin ones are just for them to hide when perched, but not good at all when they see through other birds. If you have any advices that would be great, as I am thinking about this special boy need some places to distract so he thought the hen is hiding from him which maybe better? Even just few days at least..poor me and my birdie boy, he doesn't interested in any other female in the aviary at all but missed the same one. thanks for your time again!
