What do your birds look like when they sleep?

Post by delray » Wed Mar 04, 2015 8:52 pm

I'm just curious to see, because Phineas and Ferb likes to crane his neck all around to the back when he sleeps. It's very cool. :D

Some of my birds sleep by head touch the back, some just sleep with puffy feather on the perches. I used to offer them nests or sleep for the pairs, but no longer because don't want them to keep raise the babies lol. Your pic is upside down, but I still can see it :D they are cool!

As always Brian, those boys are looking very handsome. :-D

Regarding your question.
Some of them just poof up and hunker down. Others tuck their heads backwards into fluffed feathers. Others still, seem to stick their heads under a wing. Some sleep on one leg, some on two and some fluff out their feathers over their feet, to keep their toes warm.

I guess it's a personal preference, but none of these positions seem very comfortable.

delray - Goodness, I forgot how handsome Ferb is! He's really stunning! Aunt Ginene made up some beautiful brothers for you!

Nearly all of mine sleep in nests, so they hunker down and just fall asleep in a sitting position.

My gouldians frequently sleep headless. (when they twist and tuck their head beneath their wing. When you look at them head on, they look headless, hence the term, "sleeping headless.")
All 6 used to pile into the nest, but now, just 3-4 sleep in there and the others sleep on top. One has started perching in the doorway of the nest and sleeping there. (Facing inside.) Pretty cute!

Nearly all my finches are cuddlers, sleeping right up against a mate or friend.
But curiously, the hookbills (who are more affectionate with each other generally speaking) all sleep alone.

My parakeets have a funny sleeping position. One sleeps inside the hoop swing. The other sleeps on top of the hoop (in the 1-inch between the top of the hoop and the ceiling.)
Humum to....
13 Zebra Finches....and 2 squeeps!
3 Society Finches
6 Gouldians
1 Weaver
1 Pintail Whydah
2 Cockatiels
2 Parakeets

....along with 1 MinPin, 1 Pug, 1 JRT, 1 Yorkie, 2 Chihuahuas and 15 cats.

Sleepy baby girl. She just hunkers up tight, whereas he (above) does the headless thing, lol

Oh, and they each have their favorite spot that they sleep in every night. That's the easiest way to make sure they are all still there and ok, just look for them in their usual spot. Yes, I do nightly bed checks. [-o<

MiaCarter thanks! They are show quality. ;) it seems like a lot of birds do the headless sleep, which is pretty funny. :D

@KarenB thanks for the picture. It's cool how they can sleep on a perch like that. I like to check them before I go up. Usually sleeping, unless any movements.

delray What are youre Phinneus & Ferb? They are some fine looking boys!!!! (btw love the names.... i hope if you get another bird and it's blue at all you name it Perry!!!!) ahahahhahah :D Love the pics they are so HANDSOME!!! Their feathers look so beautiful...like ...extra shiny or something, they take good care of themselves (bathing etc) and you must take MIGHTY fine care of them!!!!

Oh and btw, my birds, I can't see them when they sleep right now, as they are sleeping with their babies, but when I could, Charlotte usually slept "headless" as MiaCarter called it, and Melvin would cuddle up next to her and nod off!!! Very cut though... Almost like he didn't want to sleep headless, cuz she was, he ALWAYS Looking out for her, and now for his kids...

KarenB Not wierd about the nightly bed checks, I had a HORRIBLE dream about my Charlotte flying into my window the other night, it was SOO REAL, i woke up sobbing, and i ran to the cage to check on her...of course she was fine, but it scared the heck out of me!!!
