Scandalized by Conditions

Hello Finch Lovers

Browsing around on line, I came across a couple of pictures of Gouldians for sale.

Looking at these two pictures made me very angry. I can't believe that these people actually have the nerve to advertise these poor birds and show the deplorable conditions these poor creatures are living in.

One outfit, is actually selling 'melanistic gouldians' as a mutation, where my understanding was, that these are birds in very poor condition.

What struck me, is that if these conditions are what they are willing to show in their ads, what are the conditions like behind the scenes.

I am totally scandalize. These people should not be allowed to own any animals, let alone birds.

Oh this is upsetting.

The stark, dirty cage.
The melanistic boy.
So disturbing.

Melanism is caused by genetic flaws or a lack of light. So this bird is either poorly bred or kept in poor conditions (or both.)

I always pay close attention to the background in breeder photos.
Goodness, I can't imagine how/why you could post photos like these.

Heck, I get embarrassed when I notice one of my photos has poop on a perch or on the side of their hooded nests! (From sitting on top.)

I'd contact the guy as an interested buyer, get his details then forward them to the authorities. This is neglect.

This is not even the same breeder. This comes from two different sites, and I'm sure there are more if one looks for them.

I just found these two by chance, and it just made me want to cry. These poor little birds having to live in these conditions....

It is truly 'sickening' , as you put it Debbie.

Regarding contacting these people, I don't think I could hold a civil tongue in my mouth Mia, so better not even go there.

If these ads were on craigslist, you can report them. Actually, any online website that has accepted these ads would probably pull them if they were contacted and told how unacceptable they are. It's hard to think that anyone would be that stupid to post such disgusting pictures when trying to sell birds!

These were not on Craigslist.
I was just looking at some Gouldian images, and clicking into the bottom left corner, to get more information, when I hit on the first one, with the two Yellows. Then again on another site (and this was a breeder site, can't recall the name, but they breed mainly parrots) I came across the other poor creature.

The problem is, that even if I find them again, and even if the ad is taken down? That will not solve the issue.

Over the last few years, we've heard a lot about puppy and kitty mills. I think here is a prime example of 'bird mills'. There is absolutely no other explanation for this. And there is no excuse for keeping any creature in such filthy deplorable conditions.

Your exactly correct!
Many breeders have been using society finch as fosters to bang out as many goulds as they can. Like it or not they're are many that are abusing the whole idea of fostering and burning out the hens using them as egg making machines.
Hmmm, must be the reason I'm so anti fostering, especially when people insist you need society's to raise gouldians.

*I am NOT accusing anyone here of doing this so don't be offended

I honestly don't understand why so many people are using fosters for every egg that pops out of a Gouldian.

I'm not at all sure where this whole concept of Gouldians being 'bad parents' comes from. My guys, are wonderful parents, and absolutely love raising their babies, so much so, that they don't want to stop

I can see if there is a very good reason (but that goes for any species really, not just Gouldians) such as parents attempting to murder their children, like my first pair. Or if there is a huge clutch, splitting it up. I mean there are certainly legitimate reasons for fostering in some situations, but not on a regular basis, and most definitely not for the sake of profit.

People who keep birds in those kind of conditions.......ahhh, what can I say? There are not enough laws to stop them, and not enough ways to inforce these laws, even if they were in place. In most situations like this, even if they are shut down in one state or province, they just pop up somewhere else. Greed and cruelty, are sadly a part of human nature, and until that changes, one just has to hope, that there are more good kind people out there than the former.

I know this probably sounds nuts, but the look on the one in the second photos face, to me looks like he's saying "get me outta here" (kind of like that puppy commercial where Sara McLaughlin is singing in the background and every pic they have of a dog he just looks MISERABLE, this bird has that "puppy dog" face... this disgusts mee... No offense lovezebs but I'm kinda sad I clicked on this post.... (obviously, it's happening, and if it's happening better that it be IN YOUR FACE so that you actually do something about it...so I get it... it just made me sad)

"I love all Animals, better than I like most people."

I know it's painful to watch any creature in distress, but sometimes we need to look at these pictures, so that we make very sure, that we don't unknowingly get our pets from places such as these.

lovezebs You're so right about getting your bird from a place like this, but at the same time, If I saw this in person, I would WANT to take them out of these deplorable conditions....I would want to save them...who am I kidding I WOULD save them!!!

If I could get a truck, remove those poor birds and burn the place to the ground, I would. But buy from these breeders, never!
