Feisty Felicity!

Post by MiaCarter » Fri Mar 06, 2015 10:54 pm

Yesterday, I had everyone flying free and I decided it was a good time to do birdie pedicures.

I've got a number of sandy perches, but for a couple individuals, it seems that no amount of use keeps their nails trim.

So I caught and trimmed the first 2 without problem.
Then, I set out to catch our relatively new Weaver, Felicity. I clipped her nails at the store before I took her home, so I was expecting a battle. But wow. This was insane.

Firstly, it took me about 20 minutes to catch her.
That's unheard of! It's a finite space and I'm pretty good at catching birds. It usually takes me a minute, maybe two for a tricky bird.
But Felicity was not playing nice. She did not want to be caught and she zipped around like I've never seen before. She was so fast and agile!

I finally caught her and she let out this ungodly sound of displeasure.
If she was a dog, she'd be growling at me.

Then, she clamped down on my finger and gnawed on it nonstop. (Just as she'd done at the pet shop.)

Despite her displeasure, I got her nails trimmed nicely and I went to put her inside her cage so she could calm down.
I put my hand on the floor and gently released her.
Much to my shock and dismay, her beak was still clamped onto my finger. And she stayed that way for about 20-30 seconds.
I've never seen that before! Usually you release them and they're happy to leave. But not Felicity. She was determined to make her hatred of me abundantly clear.

It was hilarious. This tiny little bird was absolutely furious with me!
It was as though she was saying, "No way, hooman. You shall experience the wrath of my super pointy beak until **I*** end this."

Aw, Felicity.

Oh, I absolutely hate chasing birds around the house. And then having to torture them for their own good. Too bad they don't know that. Poor Felicity.

Poor Felicity? Poor Mia! The girl at Pet Land a while ago, showed me her Weaver bitten finger . It was an ugly looking bite.

Yeah, poor Felicity is an understatement!
I wish I could just make her understand that it had to be done for her own good! It didn't need to be a drawn out 20+ minute ordeal.

It's funny; while most get scared, Felicity clearly gets angry and aggressive.
I don't think I've ever gotten a bird so absolutely furious with me!

I'd try to pull my finger away and she'd bite down harder!
A very clear: "Oh no you don't! Now I've got you."

Fortunately (and much to my surprise), she didn't break skin. I think it was because she was sort of gnawing and shifting the area that she was biting.
But man, at one point, she got the webbing between my thumb and pointer finger and that hurt pretty good!
I think if she'd been in contact with one spot the entire time she would have definitely broken skin like the girl at Pet Land!

Ouch! I have often looked at the weavers in my garden and eyed their beak with weariness. Glad she didn't break the skin!

I honestly hate catching birds. I have to mentally prepare myself before I go in the aviary with net in hand. Not fun for either side

Oh the webbing between thumb and finger brings back Lovebird memories.
I'll never forget, when Peanut (my psycho Lovebird) chomped down on that tender sliver of flesh, bit right through, and locked her beak, going 'grr-grr' like a rabid Chihuahua. She WOULD not let go! I literally had to press on both sides of her beak quite forcefully to get her to release. My small washroom looked like a murder scene from a CSI show.

That was the one and only time in my life, that I came very close to killing a bird.

MiaCarter - Feisty Felicity’s fiasco indeed! It figures – you were furnishing a friendly file & Felicity fancied a fartlek in a funplex.
Hope you’re over feeling flummoxed & frazzled.
