Such a scruffy lot! :)

Post by Rox » Sat Mar 07, 2015 1:19 pm

The speed at which these orange-cheeked waxbills are moulting into their adult colour is astounding me! They are now 7 weeks old and are full of attitude and totally independent :D I will be catching and moving them over to the holding aviary next weekend. Their parents have been sitting again and it's been great watching the youngsters help build the nest and learn some skills. Super cute!

At 5 weeks old

Today - 7 weeks. All at various degrees of scruffy :D

They are looking great! It is amazing how quickly those waxbills grow up.

Oh are they ever adorable!!!

That 5 week photo is so darn cute!

I always call this stage "the uglies" but it doesn't really work for this lot as the moult has made them cuter and scruffier!

I'd love some orange-cheeked waxbills. They're so darn little and pretty.

What beauties! I've had orange-cheeked waxbills several years ago. They are lovely.

lovezebs Lol Elana, the prolonged prickly-pear look of the gouldian is something I am used to. If they would moult as quickly as the waxbill's, it would be fantastic!

Thanks everyone, they are such a happy bunch :D

Amazing! What did they look like when they came out of the nest? I suppose like the red-eared waxbill chicks? Black beak and no orange cheeks?

MariusStegmann They fledged looking like they do in the 5 week photo above. Black beak, pale orange cheeks and the dull grey/brown body. I'm just completely amazed at how quickly they are going through their molt!
