Fawn Diamond

Post by MariusStegmann » Sun Mar 08, 2015 1:55 pm

One of the Fawn Diamonds that I bred, turned out to have an orange tail. Is this common, because this is the first fawn diamond that I have seen that doesn't have a red tail? Both parents have red tails. Must be split for orange. Sorry, not a great photo, taken with my cell through the mesh.

Interesting.... It could molt out red maybe? Or maybe it is split to orange tail?

Hmm... I know nothing about them but I would keep that one back.

josh1810 Yes, I am going to keep that one, but the tail will stay orange. Once a diamond sparrow gets it adult plumage, it does not change.

Its beak in the picture also looks orange, compared to the one in the back ground... Maybe you have split parents. Breed some more and see if you get more orange tails. Maybe someone else has some and you can start a new mutation... How exciting....

I am pretty sure that it is not a new mutation. We get normal diamonds here that have red, yellow and orange tails. It would make sense that you should get those colours in fawn as well. I am going to breed the orange tail fawn to a normal red tail that is split for orange.

I've only heard of yellow tail and red tail mutations, the yellow tail is an orangey yellow so i think it's just classed as a yellow tail, The normal, fawn and silver mutations are readily available here in either yellow or red tail varieties.

Smurf Before I started to buy diamonds, I saw a couple of diamonds at a petshop with bright yellow tails. Now I can't find any, only the orange ones. I have never seen a silver, pied or white diamond in real life. I think the pieds and white are only available in Aus. Strange that they don't have the yellow tail diamonds in Aus.

I've never bred the diamond firetails but if i ever saw pieds for sale i wouldn't even hesitate depending on price of course. The're many a breeder over her who unfortunately can only dream of having pieds, next to pieds the silver would be my favourite which you should start seeing over there in next few years.

I'm sure both pieds and whites will appear over here eventually but having never even seen a european photo of either let alone a live bird, we'll have to wait a number of years :(
