Question about behaviour

Post by seeprapeippo » Mon Mar 09, 2015 10:53 am

Hello, so our zebra finches are building a nest and the male likes to take some of the material in his beak, take it for a flie and bring it back on the nest. Anyone know what this behaviour means? It's funny, but weird. What's the point?

They like to show off bits and pieces to their partner and I've noticed that my male likes to make a big show of putting something in the nest. It reminds me of when my hubby does the dishes and its like "hey honey, look what I did".

Yeah, my male did/does the same thing. Even now, he's not building a nest anymore, but there are still random pieces of burlap lying around so when they free fly, he'll find a piece and fly around with it, kind of stands up REALLY straight tries to sing with it in his mouth.... like a show... It's funny. Accept, now he does this and the female chases him around and wants the piece the male has... she tries to steal it and they play tug of war with it, sometimes she gets it, sometimes not... But the best part about it, is when she does get it she holds it in her mouth for a second, then...just drops it. She doesn't really want it, it's like she just doesn't want him to have it!! It's hilarious!!! The tug of war is pretty funny too!!! She's kind of a bully to him all the time though, that's just her personality.
But a lot of the time when the male is actually building the nest, he will show the piece to the female for approval, believe it or not. If the female approves then it will go in the nest, if she doesn't he'll drop it and try again. Then when he tries again, and she DOES approve, he gets proud and kind of shows off!!! Very cool to watch... With these birds you do NOT need a T.V!!
