CT Gets A Talking To

Post by lovezebs » Sun Mar 15, 2015 9:35 pm

Hello Friendly Finchers.

As some of you may recall, when my two wee Zebras fledged, I ran into a problem with CT, my male Cut Throat Finch, attacking one of them . Following this attack, I took CT, and moved him into my flight with the Canaries.

Well today, one of my Canary babes fledged. Well CT, stared at him and stared at him. I was watching him very carefully to see what he would do. Finally, after staring for quite some time, he inched closer and closer. Then he made his move , and was slammed down to the flight floor, by one angry Orange Canary.

I don't think he even knew what hit him as he shot off the floor up to a perch, fluffing his ruffled feathers in indignation.

He hasn't so much as looked at the baby since.

Hell hath no fury, like an enraged Canary Papa, protecting his child.

He definitely deserved it. Hopefully he will learn his lesson.

Is his species known for attacking others young?

Haha, canaries don't tolerate that type of nonsense.

Apparently, they are known for that, eventhough I would have never guessed it. CT, has always been a peaceful, gentle soul.

I had a bit of a chuckle over this incident. Luciano, is not one to anger easily, but when he does, watch out!

I've only seen him really mad once before, when he formed a close friendship with Petey (a Society Finch). One of my Zebra males, decided to pick on Petey, and Luciano almost killed him.

Way to go Papa =D> =D> =D>
Great to see the parents protecting their babies. I've heard that Cut Throat finches can be pretty aggressive. That's why I haven't been tempted to get a pair despite their pretty coloring.

I got CT, as a package deal with some other birds quite a while ago. He was free and a sweetheart really. He has a cute song, and he's always one of the first to approach and say hello when you come close to the flight.

I have never had any problems with him, and he'd never shown any aggression towards anyone. That's why this whole business, came as such an unexpected surprise, when he went after the baby Zebra.

Well he was the one in for the surprise, when he tried the same thing with the little baby Canary.

After the Zebra incident, it was brought to my attention, that Cut Throat Finches, are known for attacking baby birds and even killing them. Go figure....

Well, my Luciano, told CT, in no uncertain terms - Hands off my babies!!!

Good for Luciano!

I'm glad CT learned his lesson!
I don't like it when weak or young get picked on, especially in cases where the parents let it happen.

Cutthroats are super hit or miss with aggression. I've had some real nasty CTs, and others who were total sweethearts. (Then again, I can say that of most species i've owned!)
Humum to....
13 Zebra Finches....and 2 squeeps!
3 Society Finches
6 Gouldians
1 Weaver
1 Pintail Whydah
2 Cockatiels
2 Parakeets

....along with 1 MinPin, 1 Pug, 1 JRT, 1 Yorkie, 2 Chihuahuas and 15 cats.

Isn't that the truth?
CT, just surprised me with this very uncharactaristic behavior. Then again, I've never had him around babies before either.

lovezebs I LOVE this story... Birds sometimes are so different than mamals (mamals are VERY protective of their young) so to see a Papa bird do this is just lovely to me.. It make me LOVE Luciano even more now!!! I wish my birds were like that, instead the parents are the ones picking on the babies! I just want to take them and put them in their own cage and finish weaning them myself, but they won't take food from me, and won't beg from me, so they would starve if I did that!!! Anyhow, enough about my stupid birds, and how aweful they are, and more about how freaking sweet that was. I think it's great, that CT didn't even get the chance to get close enough to attache, Luchi must have been watching him the whole time, waiting. Which is pretty great too, cuz he could have warned CT, but nope, it's like he KNEW what it was gunna take for CT to learn, and no warning was gunna do it, but a nice little pummel to the cage floor would!!! HAHAHA Love it (not that I want CT hurt, but you know what i Mean) GO LUCIANO!!! WOO WOO!!! Deffinitely my all time FAVORITE bird now, too bad I'll never get to meet him!!
