Poor Crippled Baby Canary

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

lovezebs congrats on the babies :D very cute.

The flipped toe might take between two weeks to a month to set, with the tape it will work. My friend had the same issue and fixed it, although it wasnt 100% back to normal, the baby could perch and move around.

Hey Adam.
Good to hear from you again. I was wondering where you'd gotten off to (?)

Thanks for the info. I will definitely try to fix this problem for my little guy, if it's fixable (and I think it is). I'll be happy if at least he can perch, rather than having to drag a useless foot behind him.

How is life treating you? I hope all is well with you and yours.

Oh, and here's the second little fledgling.

Oh is your little guy above ever adorable!

Agreed with above. If it's slip claw -- which does sound/look to be the case -- it will take anywhere from 2-6 weeks to set. My guess is that it's going to be closer to the 6 week end of the spectrum since it was found relatively late in the game. (If found while they're younger and still in the nest, it sets more quickly.)

That's actually pretty lucky!
Slip claw is fairly easy to fix. Some birds need a "refresher" splinting periodically (usually within the first year of life) so keep an eye on it.
My Sydney has the same sort of defect, but it was due to a break and the joint fused. So it's stuck in a forward position.
But if it's mobile on your guy, you should be good to go! Hopefully he'll be good as new in no time!

I sure hope so. He is a little sweetheart, to put up with me bending his tiny toes this way and that way. Tiny toes..... Tiny Tim ( :? ) What do you think?

I'm ever so glad that the newest little fledgling is perfect. He has a very soul full look about him. He has that dreamy look of a poet in his eyes :-).

lovezebs - Aw, I like Tiny Tim!
That's sweet!

That new guy looks adorable! His hair slays me! I love crested birds!

My babies scared the heck out of me today!
I peeked in the nest since they still haven't fledged and I was a bit worried as I hadn't heard any begging (they're very well fed so they don't beg often anyways.)
The oldest came zipping out past me and flying around the room!
Finally caught him and put him back in there. But that sufficiently spooked the other two making them fledge prematurely! One was trying to stick her head between the bars! So frightening. I caught all three and put them back in the nest to cook for a bit longer. They're all still in there so seems to be okay for now.

Babies keep you on your toes!
How many canaries do you have in all?

Which babies are the ones that need to cook longer?
Are those the Zebras? You know, it's funny how such little things can scare the bejesus out of us. I often think, when they pull these stunts, whose more startled, them or us. They usually settle down pretty quick, while we're staggering about , clutching our heart so that it doesn't shoot out through our throat :-D.

lovezebs - I know it!

Yep, it's the three zebra babies. Cecily, Tiny and Wigglebug. (Wigglebug was the one who flew out, while Tiny and Cecily tried to squeeze out through the cage bars!)

I definitely think we scared each other! They were definitely scared and me too!

Poor foster dad Jackson was super stressed over it too. He sat there panting while the babies stuck their head out the bars.
"Oh goodness! My babies are going nuts!"

It is really crazy how they can frighten the bejesus out of us! I had another scare last night, but that's worthy of its own thread! http://www.finchforum.com/viewtopic.php ... 62&start=0

Luciano's other bride, Siena, is still around.
She was the one to lay eggs first, but they disappeared. Don't know if she ate them, or somone else did, or if we have an eggnapper around here.
Since then she hasn't laid anymore eggs, eventhough I have seen Luciano and her doing the happy dance.

Maggie Smith, eh? Not sure if she would be flattered.... Then again she should be, because my little Pokey, is adorable :-D.

Hi Laura, and thanks. So I have little Tiny Tim, with his crippled foot, and little Pokey, who seems to be a little developmentally challanged...... Oh dear :-) what can we do?

Hopefully, Tiny Tim's toe will get better, with the taping I did. And hopefully little Pokey, will come around , and learn to perch and fly like other birds [-o<

Whatever happens, I really love both of these little guys (or girls). Might have to re-think the names, if they turn out to be girls, lol.

lovezebs - Why learn to perch and fly when you can get snuggles and gramma Elana kisses?

I hear ya on the name bit.
I've only got a few more gender-neutral names on my list! And I already have several males with female names! (Molly Sue the zebra finch, Louise the 'keet, Eliza the cat.)

I have so many misnamed birds; Gracie the boy cockatiel, Amber the male society, Ozzy the lady zebra, Jack the lady society... We had a male Olivia for a while but now he is Olive.

And we had Steve the hen canary too.
