I was just looking closer, and I think that egg on the bottom there is about to open up to another little surprise. Love babies.

Congratulations!!

Beautiful baby. Too bad he didn't lift his head up, he'd look like he was wearing a helmet, lol.

Any more cuties popped out yet?

lovezebs, I took that pic right before heading out the door this morning. I'm working late tonight so won't be home for a little while yet. But I will be making a bee line for that flight when I get home.

Well, I checked the nest, and the baby that hatched this morning appears to be well fed. There was a dried up baby in there, too. Not sure when it hatched. It still had some softness to it, but it was teeny. The three remaining eggs don't look like they will be hatching. So, hopefully the parents will continue feeding this one baby. I now wish I had gotten a photo of it, but it still had its back to me, and I couldn't see its face but I could see the crop was full on the right side.

vienneparis, Thanks! But it looks like only one baby. Of the three eggs left, two look infertile and one looks DIS.

Here we are at 24 hours old. This will be the last pic for a while as I do not want to disturb the nest further at this point.

Not sure what happened, but I came home tonight to find a tossed and dead baby parrotfinch in the seed dish breaded with seeds. :( I emptied the nest of the bad eggs and put the nest back. Maybe they will try again. I did find one of the recent gouldian fledges in their nest earlier today, so I'm not sure if that was a factor, or something else.

So sorry to hear about your PF baby. It's so frustrating when the parents don't nurture their chicks. Then again, maybe nature is ensuring that only the strongest chicks survive.

Hope the parents will try again [-o<

It's not unusual for them not to care for just one chick. In nature it just doesn't make sense to waste all that time on one. Sad but true :(
Hope they go back to nest for you and raise a full clutch.

good luck

KarenB I just read this thread and 1. I am so excited Lil Red had babies!! 2. I'm so sad they tossed some babies!! #-o They can be very sensitive to nest checks too, like gouldians, so next time, just let them do their own thing and offer plenty of eggfood and FDBWs. You'll be presented with fledges in no time! [-o< [-o<
