Baby Society Finch
I went into my aviary like I do every morning to change the water. This Society Finch was sitting on the edge of the water bowl. I was able to pick it up and it let out a little chirp. That was strange in itself. Finches don’t let you pick them up usually. When I took a second look I realized it was a fledgling. I know what some of you are thinking…so what was the big deal? Well my Society Finches have not had babies for me yet. When the hatchlings are about 5 days old, they through them out of the nest. I would find them dead. Society Finches are one of the best breeder you can have, but not mine. I only let them breed for the fun of watch them court and build nest. Just part of the fun of having an aviary. So this shows me they stopped killing their babies and now being good parents. Which I am happy. I don’t ever like walking into my aviary to find dead chicks on the floor. I don’t know what changed but I am glad it did.

Acky
What a lovely surprise for you
Congratulations!
I know what you mean about some Societies, not being good parent material. Mine raised three unloved Gouldian babes for me, but would toss their own hatchlings. Go figure...
Right now I have a bunch of them sitting on some eggs, don't know who's they are. We shall see what they do this time around.
Good luck with your feathered kids. Hopefully there are a few more little ones hiding in the nest

Re: Baby Society Finch
I try not to ever bother the nest, but from what I can see it looks like there are a few more in the nest too.
