Do Java Rice finches like to roost in a nest?

Post by Anneka » Wed Apr 08, 2015 11:33 pm

Wondering if I should give mine an open/canary-type basket.
Or do they always sleep on a perch?
Thanks

Mine always perch, the hen will sleep in the nest when they have babies but neither do so otherwise.

Anneka
At night, my javas like to pile into the finch-size nest box in the flight cage, where or not the female is breeding. Where no nest is provided, they roost on perches.

Thank you, Dylan and Vienne.
In this case, I will give them a basket and see what happens :)

We will start with a bigger plastic canary nest, because that's what I have. If they like it and use it, they will be given a wicker one. I try to make their environment as natural as possible.

Thanks again!

This is really of topic, but I have noticed you both have a nice variety of birds. Which species is your favorite? Just curious.

It's hard to pick a favorite. I love gouldians for their sweet personality and colorful look. My canaries have such vivid personality and melodious songs. The parrot finches are fun to watch. The waxbills are so devoted to each other. My javas make great parents. . . . .

As you can see, I have soooo many favorites :D

I agree with You that Gouldians have a sweet personality.

Not even half an hour and they are perching there, but most likely because the basket is the highest perching spot in their cage now :)

As a breeder of a good size flock of zebras.... I disagree with adding a nest.... no nest unless you are breeding. If you java are under the age of 9 months...no nest. If you male is eager to breed and the hen starts producing the canary nest is not adequate, java clutches can be large up to 8 to 10 eggs and most the chicks survive. Java chicks can be very large, upon fledging the chicks can be bigger if not the same size as the parents.

When breeding the proper nest is a wooden parakeet box. They are very private when breeding.

Finches do not need nests to sleep in. providing a nest as you have will signal a go ahead for breeding.

Try a roosting platform instead of a nest.
