A Cute Canary Fledgling

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

A Cute Canary Fledgling

Post by lovezebs » Fri Apr 24, 2015 1:03 am

Hello Canary Lovers and All Others

When I went to turn off the lights and tuck the kids into their nests tonight, I saw a cute little birdie sitting on a perch beside the Canary nest.

I looked at him, and he looked at me, and then it hit me. *-:) *-:) *-:) A FLEDGLING!!!

The first of Luciano and Sofia's second clutch, has made the big jump, and stepped out into the big world. He appears to be a crested little darling, and still has a little bald spot on his chest.

Pictures tomorrow :-D

That is wonderful. I always love it when little ones leave the nest. :) Crest...I remember the first time I saw a bird that was crested. I said "What's with that hippy hair doooo" Love to pics

This morning, found him sitting in a water bowl, looking wet, cold, and somewhat disgruntled. Poor little fella. Popped him back in the nest, to warm up with sibs.

Now he's sitting at the very edge of the nest, not so sure if he wants to take the leap again. Not the best intro to the big world, sitting up to you tushy in cold water.

He's seriously thinking about it, going cheep-cheep cheep-cheep, then yawning. I hope he doesn't fall asleep in this position, 'cause he might tumble down on his head, lol.

lovezebs I know this isn't a question that belongs to this topic but my mom wants to start keeping canaries, and wants a pair. She doesn't want breeding just a male and female. Can they be housed together fine? in a 30x18x18 cage without divider, or is divider needed? Will they fight?
Hi I'm Zachariah.

And hopefully many more finches to come!!!! :) :D :) :D

Yes they will fight, and half of a divided cage is way too small for a canary. Canary pairs rarely get along in small cages. They sometimes can in very large flights like Elana uses and will usually do so in aviaries like I have. The issues usually come around outside the nesting season, when a cage just doesn't allow enough personal space.

Societies&Zebras

They will breed if housed together.
If you divide a 30/18/18, it will be way too small for a Canary in each half. Canaries, are not that small. Plus, keeping them like that, would be cruel and drive your birds crazy.

If you don't wish to breed, why get a pair in the first place? Get a male, if you want a singer. Get a female, if you want a sweet cheerful bird with a pleasant chirp.
