Ouch!

Post by Beckyrasdf » Mon Jun 01, 2015 9:37 pm

Funny story from this evening -
We purchased our first pair of Gouldians last weekend. I've come to decide they're gorgeous but a little too mellow for our taste. We like the vocal, active, rascal finches :) Anyways, I pulled out the female to inspect her nails and as I'm holding her she chomps down on my finger with all her might. And then again! And again and again and again! I think if I had let her go she would have just dangled from my finger! I was so surprised that I almost dropped her, and I have little red pinch marks up and down my finger to show for it now. I had no idea finches even attacked humans like that! It really hurt!!
That little display of feistiness really tickled me. I suppose that's the last time I underestimate the gouldians! :P

They can get quite feisty! I guess your female didn't like having her nails checked. I had the same thing happen this morning with one of my old fellows. He's around 9 years old now (from my very first gouldian clutch) and can't perch any more, but when I tried to clean him up a little (he sits under the perches so tends to get poo on his back) and check his nails he let me know in no uncertain terms that he did not appreciate the attention!

I recently had the same experience with one of my gouldian hens, trying to trim her nails. She started her "biting" action up and down my finger and I had to say "ouch" (even though it didn't hurt at all) so as not to hurt her feelings!

I love your story!! NEVER underestimate Gouldy's they are deffinitely feisty in their own right... you know what they say? I'ts the Quiet ones you have to watch out for!!!
My Gouldian Cock, is just under a year old when I got him, he had an accident and lost a foot (before I took him) and when I got them home to get him out of the little travel cage and into his new cage, i held the door open and the other 2 went in but little Ren wouldn't budge (i think he would have stayed in that tiny little cage had I let him!!!) So i reached in to pick him up and move him into the large cage, of course he flailed around so the way i grabbed him, was backwards, instead of his face sticking out, his tail/butt was sticking out and his head was against the palm of my hand and he bit the HECK out of the palm of my hand!!!! So glad you maybe now haven't changd your minds about goulds, they are quite something, full of surprises too!!! Good luck with them!!!

PS you must LOVE zebras!!! lol
