Klubertranz is another source, with multiple sizes available: http://www.klubertanz.com/images/Klubertanz_Pg19.pdf

I have ordered things from both sources and would recommend.
I forgot to post the second Klubertranz link. Plastic trays at the bottom of the page: http://www.klubertanz.com/images/Klubertanz_Pg18.pdf

Also, forgot to mention, they do custom sizes for the galvanized trays.

I checked the MJ site.
The shipping weight for those small cages must be wrong.
10 pounds for the 14x11x18 cage??? that will be $$ shipping.

With a tray, I can build a cage to fit w 1/2" square plastic coated hardware cloth/wire mesh from Home Depot.

I looked at the small cages, but was not happy with them for use in my bathroom. I got a couple small ones at the bird mart, but they are too small. (the bigger ones are too big to fit) Adequate for quarantine, but I would not want to keep the birds in those cages for much longer than my quarantine period.

My societies have to be kept in extended quarantine until I can test that they are "clean." So they need a cage that I can install a nest in and they can raise a couple chicks.

The other issue I have w the cafeteria tray is the rounded corner will make it hard to line the tray w newspaper. I suppose I can fold and tape the newspaper down or cut the paper to fit into the rounded corner. Just something to figure out.

I can't remember exactly what they charged for shipping on the 4 cages I bought, but it was very reasonable, especially since they had to ship them all the way from California to Georgia. I'm thinking it was $17 or so, which isn't bad for 4 cages. I e-mailed and asked them first, and they got back to me with a quote very quickly. Their website says they're in Ramona, CA. Not sure how far that is from you, but since it's the same state, I bet the shipping will be very low. :)

We don't subscribe to a newspaper, so I use butcher paper (on a roll), and I cut it into rectangles the sizes I need. On the cafeteria trays, I just eyeball it and cut the corners off at a 45 degree angle. :)

You could make a carboard template of the size you need to cut and make several at one time for future use.

don't see why not, I used silicone sealant in every joint of the aviary and all the cages we ever made and had no issues. All my cages are built with solid backs and sides to minimize the mess that goes outside their area.
Do you have pictures of your cages - perhaps already loaded here somewhere? I have been researching how to make cages. Thinking of 5-6' long x 2' deep x 30" tall - but would be interested in your suggestions. Thanks in Advance.

debbie276, I've looked for those big sheet sizes at Home Depot, and was hoping to find them when building my aviary. I never thought about checking to see it it was available from their online site. DOH! I may have to order some, even though it is a 10 sheet minimum. I'm sure the extra sheets could come in handy! Hmmm, that gives me some good ideas for my next bird project.

:-)

Toddmin

We were always able to find them in the store though it's been a while now. Sometimes they are with the paneling and other times they were in the bath area. As long as you can use 10 sheets it probably would be best to order and ship-to-store

good luck

I seemed to have messed up a message I tried to get to you, so here we go again.

quote: ....I used silicone sealant in every joint of the aviary and all the cages we ever made and had no issues. All my cages are built with solid backs and sides to minimize the mess that goes outside their area.

Any chance you have pictures of these cages/aviaries?

Sorry I missed your original message. I don't have the indoor aviary any more, all the birds are outside and I recently lost a lot of my stuff on an old computer. I did find an old post with pictures of the solarium aviary though, http://www.finchforum.com/viewtopic.php ... oor+aviary
The others were just large boxes with wire fronts and tops.
Hope that helps

Thanks Debbie. I had a look. The 'fly away' as you called it - over the door - so this was just a narrow long 'flight' box. Looks like it might be coroplast?? The silicone in all the corners - was that to try and keep bacteria from multiplying where the wood meets? Or mites (if they did occur)? I must admit I am just not sure I like the idea of wood - melamine ok - and I was thinking of silicone. A friend was concerned the birds might pick at and eat it, but the aquarium stuff is non-toxic?

The flyway was attached so if they just wanted to fly they would go up into it and zip back and forth. It was a white shelf bottom and back with hardware cloth top and front. There were no perches in it so when they were done they would fly back down into the main area, they used it a lot.
I used sand on the bottom and sifted it with a reptile scoop to remove the droppings. I sealed the joints so the sand didn't get on the floor. Never had a bacteria problem or any problem from the material for the 10 years I used that set-up.

Sounds like a fantastic idea. Sorry, I should have thought to ask the width and height of the flyway??

Just had another look - now I see where the mesh is. .... just thinking...so if I have the right spot, I should be able to locate a cage on either side of a large entry like what you have and build a flyway above and they will likely travel from cage to cage. What do think? I would of course have food and water on each side.

The reptile scoop - have never looked at them - but they pick up the solids? and no problem with smell from urine left behind?

Sorry Lou - I did not mean to hijack your tray thread. Maybe Sally can move the discussion when she gets back.

Any size shelf that fits in your area would work, I believe that one was 12" wide. Your idea would be great, I was surprised how quickly and how much they used mine.
The reptile scoop is just like a kitty litter scoop but has a smaller mesh. Cleaning the aviary was like cleaning a litter box lol
