the plywood panels on the floor are covered with visqueen which is easily wiped down with Virkon S and the visqueen is changed out/replaced as needed. The substrate on the bottom is kiln dried pine, large flakes.

I would not use a steam method with wood or in the room it is in.

Thank-you Cindy. What do you use to routinely clean the wood? Do you ever use anything stronger than your usual method - ie) if you thought a bird had a bacteria or viral infection that could be contagious? Pine oil causes respiratory problems for some animals. Does the kiln drying prevent this from happening?

I have two avian vets and ran by them the best substrate to use. White paper was the number one choice since you can monitor droppings but the birds, second was the kiln dried pine. I have used it in the aviary, my colony of owls (from two different lines) are some of my originals, 7 yrs and older and offspring.

It was strongly recommended to avoid cedar, the pine pellets, crushed walnut and never use corn cob.

Housed in with the owls were Rosey bourkes (now removed for breeding)

To clean I use Virkon S or peroxide or white vinegar. I like Virkon S the best.

Derk, To solve these cleaning issues we use poplar. then it is sanded and finished. it's now just like a table top. basicly you can now use just about any chemical. Stop buying the wood at Home Depot. High prices! If you have real tools or access to them go to the local supplier. Poplar is 60% lower there. And yes anyone can buy there. If they want a business name, make it up. This also is where you would get a ply laminate or a UV ply for the bottoms. the latter is Much cheaper. For anyone that wants a solid back of cage you buy the UV ply. It's a coating already applied by the factory. It's use for cabinets and is a indestructible finish. You need to think about porosity when you use wood for cages. It must be sealed!
