Aviary extension

Post by Rox » Thu Jul 16, 2015 3:40 am

Hi all,

Just thought I would share what I have been up to the last few months. This aviary has always been too small to have permanent plants in (watering the plants and having wet ground in winter is a problem), so during breeding season I always rotate potted plants for them or seed trays planted with grasses. But now, come Spring time, they will have a garden :D

The total size of the aviary will now be 6mx2mx2m, half fully planted and the other half will remain as is for the nesting area. The nesting area side will also be closed off with shade-cloth in front to give complete privacy in this section. I will also be able to spread the nest boxes around onto the front of the aviary, creating more nesting space for the birds which will result in less competition for everyone.

The aviary has been heavily planted to attract as many bugs as possible into the aviary. Black-eyed Susie creepers have been planted along the back fence and this will eventually be a hedge of color and it attracts aphids by the zillions, which the waxbills love. Basically, the more live food I can encourage into the aviary, the less I need to worry about feeding additional bugs :)

The birds will be released about middle October, once it warms up here. Let me just say that the waiting is torture!!!! :D

(Ps. There is plastic on the aviary's to block winter wind and rain. This comes down in summer)

Very nice addition! I love all the plants and stepping stones. Can't wait till you open up the add-on section so your birds can "fly free"! Please post more photos. When your family can't find you, I know where you will be!!! You will spend as much time in the aviary as your feathered friends. LOL My four year old grandson always knows exactly where to find me. He says "Gammie are you in the bird cage AGAIN?"

Wonderful !
It looks like this will double your aviary size. I love the idea of a planted area and I'm sure the birdlings will love it too.

That is awesome! Your aviary looks amazing! I am building my aviary now. Hopefully it'll be ready mid August.

How wonderful is that? You already have such a nice setup, and now you are making it even larger, lucky birds!

Awesome Rox... 8) know you've wanted to do that for a while.
Well done. Your birds are even more spoilt for choice now. No wonder they breed well for you.

Thanks all!! Being able to combine a love for gardening and birds into 1 enclosure has been so much fun. I've been collecting plants for a while for this extension and the end result is so worth it!

Jen, my friends already think I am nuts because I spend so much time with the birds but hey, it makes me happy :) Nothing beats watching them fly around in a natural environment. Your birds are just a spoilt!!! :D

lovezebs, Elana, I have exactly doubled the size of the aviary. Sad part is now I have officially run out of space in the garden for more aviary's, lol

I must also just add, this extension was put up by my mom. 62yrs old, retired and still the best handywoman I know!! :)

You should rent out your Mom, as a handywoman. She has done a wonderful job, and please tell her so.

It looks gorgeous. I can not wait to have an outdoor aviary sometime. My yard is full of Wooly Aphids... I wonder if the birds would like those...
