We did it! Last night my wife and I caught and tagged five baby finches. Yes, we had two escapees, but both were quickly captured and returned home safely. I was so scared to attempt such a thing, but it was really not that hard. Credit should be given to http://www.finchinfo.com/breeding/leg_b ... eeping.php for such great guidance.
Since getting our little finches this spring, it has been such an adventure. This was one of the first times that I felt like we got over a little speed bump with minimal disaster. Thanks for letting me share!
Side note for anyone who has been reading my posts: We had two healthy Zebra clutches - one with two babies and one with three. We had no idea that there were three in the second; we really thought there was maybe one or two. Both clutches have fledged. The first (almost a week older) is starting to pick around in the food bowl. The last of the second clutch just fledged today. Since he was the surprise bird that increased our total population to 11, we have named him 'Leven. And so that we have no more surprises, the nests are coming out now.
