Sally
I vacume ,and vacume, AND vacume, and wipe things down constantly. With me, I find that it's not so much the dust, but seeds and hulls and feathers just everywhere.
I always have to ask people to call before they come over, so that I have time to run around with the Vacume one more time. I just can't seem to keep up with it, but that's neither here nor there.
I have a very good friend, who has a mild feather allergy; when she comes over It's just awful (don't get me wrong, I love her dearly. I mean it's awful for her). It starts with a bit of a sniffle, then her voice gets raspy, and then she stars to itch and twitch and get red marks on her skin. It becomes almost unbearable.
Allergies are one thing, but this lung disease, is something else all together, and apparently not reversible. Once the damage is done, it's done, which is kind of scary.

Re: Bird Dust Diseasec????
My husband was just told he has 'prominent interstitial markings [that] appear chronic' according to his chest xrays. We thought he had walking pneumonia or bronchitis or something because of all the coughing fits. on the list of main causes were birds. I've only had finches for about 2 years but they will have to go. I was so initially devastated that I'm afraid my husband thought I cared more about the birds
After a few days of processing this, it's really that I want them to have a good and caring home. Which I think I found for all 9 birds. Their cage is always kept clean and vacuumed but any kind of air blowing will still throw dust into the air and it's a large cage that's kept in an area next to the family room/bedrooms/kitchen, it's an open concept house. But, again, as long as I know they're going to home that loves birds, I can live with that.

Re: Bird Dust Diseasec????
thanks Debbie. I think the birds will have a wonderful time living in an outdoor aviary as compared to a cage
if there is an upside to all of this, that is it. thanks for to all for the help these last 2 years.

I'm glad that you found a good home for your bird babies. It's too bad that you won't be able to have any finches though.
Is hubby going to be ok ? What treatment do they offer for this condition?

Re: Bird Dust Diseasec????
Years ago my mother-in-law and father-in-law raised pigeons and showed them at fairs and different competitions. My mother-in-law became ill with a lung condition and it was attributed to the pigeons. It is a very serious condition and something that was not curable for her.
Since then, I have always been conscious of the dust that birds cause around their living environment. I have allergies, but birds (or no birds since they are in an outdoor aviary now) don't have an effect on that. Not that long ago I read where PetsMart was sued because someone purchased a parakeet and it made them sick. For quite a long time there were NO BIRDS in PetsMart here where I live. Now when you purchase a bird (or in my case where I am given a rescue bird) you are handed a "warning sheet" listing all the illnesses you can contact having birds.
I think that anyone with any type of animal living in their home need to make extra efforts to keep that environment EXTRA clean....so we can live in harmony with our pet babies!!!

Elana,
We'll be meeting with the pulmonary specialist next week. The first we heard about any health issues was last week but the primary was on board with the birds contributing/causing the problem. It's quite scary although my husband is, for the most part, handling it ok.

I really hope that they can come up with a good treatment for your husband, and that all will be well.
Best wishes.

Thank you for your generosity in allowing me to adopt your flock of gouldian and owl finches. They are wonderful birds, full of colors and personalities. I'm sure they will settle nicely into my aviary and flight cage with the rest of my flock.
I finally finished unpacking and sorting out the carload of perches, nests, waterers, feeders, cups, medicine, food, lamps, and other bird necessities you gave me in addition to the birds. I'm sure those will last me for years. I couldn't believe how much stuff you managed to collect for your birds!
It sure felt like Christmas in July for me. I got all the birds that have been on my wishlist for a while. Thank you sooooooooo much.
I'm so sorry that my good fortune had to come from your husband's illness. I hope his condition will improve quickly. I'll keep your family in my prayers
