Fire Finches - eggs! (update)

Woo hoo - I'm a little over the top today. I went up to give the second application of Scatt to my new Fire and Strawberry Finches. Did the Strawberries with no problem. Then went to catch the Fires and noticed the hen was not coming out of the nest. So I decided to "just do it" and get it over with even if she's sitting on eggs (which I highly doubted) - they've both been in and out of the nest for the past week. I did manage to finally catch him and then her and while they were both out of the nest - I took a quick peek and another to confirm YES there are 2 eggs in there. I'm glad I did the Scatt now to keep them on schedule.

Yippee for new Fire Finch eggs!

cograt's liz!! I hope to see pics of little fire finch babies very soon. Good to know people are having good luck with them. I had to go see my boy the other day, I think about him all the time. His best buddy right now is a orange cheek. The owners say they will try to get a female for him in Jan some time!

Thank you both! I hope to see little Fire Finch babies soon too! I'll have to check the incubation time for Fire Finches so I can figure out the proposed hatch-date.

That's great that the new people are going to get a friend for yours in January. I'll bet they are getting excited too.

I told them if they get a female, I'll buy the pair, lol! Someone else had bought the female they had awhile ago and he's been alone ever since ;(

Thanks Terry. I've never had Fire Finches before 3 weeks ago today (obtained them on Dec 4th), let alone FF babies! I hope the parents'll be okay with fresh but dead mealworms. I just gave them some seeding grass this morning. Anything special I should know?

That's different - selling off one of a pair and not having a mate for it...? Oh well - I hope they do get another female and you get the pair!!

I'd make sure they have meal worms available as it appears they really like live food once the babies. We'll make sure to have them even though they haven't really taken a liking them just yet.

I'd also make sure you plenty of egg food available as well in addition to the seed and seeding grasses.

Let's hope both our parents do a great job raising them!

wow Liz, they made theirselves at home really quick didn't they?
Congrats! I guess that male decided to cooperate with her after all. Can't wait to see how many and hopefully they will hatch and raise them.

congrats Liz. make sure there is an almost endless supply of livefood for them once the young hatch. it is all they seem to eat at that time. they will also eat a lot of soft vegies like cucumber and squash. mine dont appear to eat much seed at all while raising young.

Congrats--nice Christmas surprise! Mine didn't eat a lot of mealworms last season, but they tossed their first babies this season, so maybe they now want more livefood. Mine are sitting again, too. I never quite got an exact time schedule, but seems like mine hatched out before I expected them, so I'd say they may go on a 12-day incubation schedule.

I just went to remove the hb egg/soak seed dishes from the Strawberry and Fire Finch cages just now and I saw a perfect 1/2 shell on the floor of the Fire Finch cage. Huh! I don't know what to make of it. She would not come out of the nest to let me see in. So I'll presume they somehow broke an egg (perfectly in half?) and ate the contents.

It's way too early for any egg to hatch as I only saw the first 2 eggs in the nest on Christmas day - less than a week ago.
