New baby blue

Post by kyle » Sat Aug 01, 2015 5:51 pm

Tuesday I pick up my new baby blue gouldian. So excited. It's been a long time coming. Seemed hard to come by in my area. Although very young at seven weeks I Decided to go ahead and buy him/her as I know the breeder and if there's any problems I'm sure we can work it out. No guarantee of the sex yet but I'm thinking female. Still a long way off but will pair her with the split male. This is one hobby that you don't want to be in a hurry. :)

She's a real cutie, but is she fully weaned? Looks very very young. Your boy, looks like he's almost finished molting.

Congratulations.

Exactly right Elana. She is very young. Ideally id like to wait a little longer but I'm told she is eating on her own for the last 2 weeks. Blue goulds are in damand here and I fear if I snooze I loose. lol. And having had two successful clutches behind me I feel confident enough to take it on. I've read that They will be all they will be health wise if they get a great nutritional start the first 6 months. So it gives me the opportunity to make sure he/she gets the best food. My male just turned 6 months and just finishing his moult.

LoL! The pin cushion look.
They always look so pathetic when they molt, like someone dragged them them through a hedge backwards.

Regarding baby girl, I've had different experiences with young birds (although not this young). A male that I'd bought as an uncoloured youngster in the Pet Shop, sailed through his first molt without batting an eyelash. A little girl, that had been bought from the same Shop (by another lady who later changed her mind, and sold her to me) , had a terrible time of it and almost went belly up on me during her first molt.

So go figure.....

I hope all will go well for you, and that next year's breeding season, will bring you blue babies.

Beautiful male and wow that chick IS young. They usually aren't reading to even think about moving on their own till they have only 2 nodules remaining and yours still has the 3.

Hope all goes well, best of luck

Maybe you could put a good down payment on it and pay a little extra if they would keep it a little longer. Either way, good luck with the little guy.

It looks like that baby blue is in with a Society. Was it fostered? Good luck with it, that really is young.

Elana, Debbie276, wildbird, sally. Thank you. I know its really very young but I was surprised when I got a call from the breeder. He knows I have been looking for a blue gould for awhile . He only has one breeding pair of blues. I know he has demand for them but I think because we get on well he moved me up the list. I was surprised when he called me and surprised he was selling so young. Not wanting to lose the hope of getting a blue or be rude we settled on price and he agreed to keep her another 2 weeks, which is this Tuesday. I wish In the excitement i had the for sight to have done a down payment but after we made arrangements I felt the deal was done. The picture I posted of the chick I received 2 weeks ago when we made the deal. Yes she was fostered as she was the only chick in the clutch that hatched and the parents abandoned shortly after. Even though young If she is eating well and healthy looking I should be ok, keeping my fingers crossed. I'll post pictures later this week.

Looking forward to baby pictures :-).

I know you really wanted a blue baby, but just a word of caution, I would really hesitate to deal with a breeder, who is willing to sell chicks at such young an age. Ususally, good breeders won't sell Gouldi babies until after first molt.

Good luck.

Baby blue has arrived! Today she has eaten millet and drank and I see a little scattering of finch seed. And although she was fed boiled egg I haven't seen her eat it here yet. The pictures aren't super but I don't want to frighten her.

She's absolutely gorgeous , Kyle. Congratulations!

Keep offering egg, maybe mix together with a bit of crumbled spray millet to entice the little lady. It's good for her.

The weeks later and baby blue is doing great! She is eating a little of everything. She is in a large flight with four other girls. No worries about her being younger as she can certainly hold her own!
