Cold winter nights
Last night was one of those really cold nights.
In my backyard it was minus 8 degrees Celcius.
Water features frozen.

Re: Cold winter nights
Wow, that's cold! Hope your birds are doing ok.
It's 41 celsius here in Arizona. I'm trying to keep my birds cool with fans and misters!

Chris, you're still with us
I was begining to wonder about the South African contingent
That 'Is' cold for you guys, wow. Yea, water will start freezing around zero, and -4c, is a killer frost for non-hardy plants. How are the birds doing with these temperatures? How do you keep them warm?
We are having a long hot Summer (for Canada) here with temps today at 32c. Had an easy Winter, an early Spring, and the good weather keeps coming.

That is cold! Do you have a small heater for the birds? Do they have an inside area where they can go to get out of the weather?

Re: Cold winter nights
The aviary is 12m x 7m.
There is an area partitioned with canvass where they go in to sleep.
I do have 4 infrared 250w bulbs but have noticed that at night not a bird in sight. They prefer their nests or whatever spots they have selected to sleep.
Finches are very hardy if acclimatised properly. As long as they are dry and out of the wind and drafts.
The nicest part is when the sun comes through - man do they seek and enjoy every ray that comes into the aviary.
These photos were taken shortly after completion of the aviay. There are now quite a few more plants and I plan to add more as soon as spring comes.

Re: Cold winter nights
Wonderful set-up!
I've also seen how hardy these little birds really are in the winters here in NJ.
best of luck

Yucky, I don't miss the Highveld frost at all. While we may get the winter rain here in Cape Town, at least we don't get as cold as you do!
I still love your aviary's! One day I will have a set-up like that
