Hello,
I will be bringing new gouldian finches home tomorrow. I have a separate cage for them to be in, but want to know how much space should be in between the cages...
My big cage is in a computer room. It is a small room, but because it has its own doors that close, it's good for the cage in case someone escapes.
If I put the quarantine cage in the same room, the corners of the two cages would be about 5-6 feet apart. Is that enough to consider it a quarantine, or should the second cage be in a separate room?
Thanks, Laura

Re: Quarantine for new birds
The best would be separate rooms but if that's not possible as far away from each other that they can be.

I agree, next room would be best, but you make do with what you can. Just be sure to wash your hands between handling cages/birds. It is usually best to work with your old birds first, then wash hands and work with the new birds, so you don't carry anything back and forth.

Ok...I guess upstairs in an extra bedroom it is!
So...is quarantine supposed to be a full 30 days?

Some quarantine for 30 to 90 days. I think it depends on the source you purchased your birds from and if domestic or wild caught the length of time you quarantine.

For my cockatiels the general consensus among other tiel people is two weeks. So that is what I did with my finches. They were kept in a separate room for two weeks and then added to the aviary. Of course none of my finches were wild caught. They came from a store from various breeders.
