A Dead Waxbill And A Dying Wasp

Post by lovezebs » Tue Aug 18, 2015 9:42 pm

 Sad news today......

Found one of my little African Red Billed Fires, dead this morning.

The weird part about this sad business, is that yesterday afternoon, I had a few wasps flying around the house. Not quite sure where these demons came from, but seeing as I hate them with a passion, I dispatched several of them mercilessly and had thought that I got all of them.

Before going to bed last night, I heared my Waxbill flight in a bit of an uproar. Seeing as they're usually sleeping peacefully by that time, I went to check on them. Everyone appeared to be alright, but wide awake for some unusual reason. And then I saw it, a large wasp crawling on the floor from under the flight. He seemed to be half dead, and a second later he was squashed and done for under my slipper.

I checked the flight over, but everybody seemed to be calming down, and settling In for the night . I went to bed, and woke up to a dead little Fire boy, and his brother crying for him.

Could a wasp sting kill a little Waxbill ? All I know, is that be was alive last night and gone this morning :( .

So sorry to hear about your loss, Lovezebs. Don't know if a sting would kill a small bird, but maybe, especially if he attempted to catch it. He may have flown into something in the flight also, if he got stung. Hope his brother will soon recover from his loss too.

Wasp's sting would definitely kill a finch - that's thousand of times more venom compared to its body weight than you or I. : ( poor guy!

So sorry for your loss. I've never heard of a wasp killing a finch, but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen. Perhaps it was a night fright, but it still doesn't make it easy.

Elana,

So sorry to hear about your little waxbill. I can imagine a wasp sting would definitely kill such a delicate bird.

And you seeing the wasp crawling on the ground under the flight cage, probably meant the wasp was injured before/after it stung.

Good thing you saw that wasp, or you would have been clueless as to what happened.

Never heard of a wasp sting killing a bird before but I guess if some humans can have a bad reaction to stings so can birds.
So sorry for your loss :(

Thanks folks.

I feel sad for his little brother, they have never been apart since hatching, and it's so sad watching him looking for his brother.

They would always cuddle together and preen each other, and were so wrapped up in each other, that they ignored all the other birds.

I have already talked to one of my fellow bird club memebers (who raises Red billed Fires). He should have either a female or another male ready for us in another three weeks to a month.

Hopefully my poor little boy will be ok until then.
