Some Pics
Hi I hopped out to my aviary today, manged to feed the birds some chickweed and took a few photo's. I have one Seagreen Parrotfinch cock that I think is especially beautiful. He has a deep orange / golden yellow mask.

Thanks Debbie, the pictures are not great. I just took them with my cell phone through the mesh.

Yay Marius, the hop-a long-champion
Your birds, are looking great. Your wife must be doing a great job.
Red faced parrots are looking in very good shape .
Your seagreen parrot IS LOVELY.
Am I seeing some pied spots on him? Also, your Star, has an interesting white ring around her face, which I have never seen before (?) The yellow/green, is that your Canary?
Everyone loves chickweed

Yes, you are right, the starfinches are not the normal ones. Both starfinches are pieds. Yes, there are white spots on my Seagreen cock, in South Africa, we call it a normal pied. Everywhere else it is called a lightly pied. The yellow is my pig of a canary. He has given my wife a few scares, flew out a couple of times, starts eating the food while she is still holding it. He is an absolute glutton.

Ha-ha-haah. All Canaries, are gluttons in my opinion. That's why some breeders really restrict their food intake (me not being one of them).
So lightly pied for the seagreen. As I recall, that's your favorite mutation, right?
I have never heared of pied Stars before. You learn something new everyday
. Mine, are the ususal Orange (yellow) heads.
How's the weather today? We have pouring rain, and 10 c degrees.

Re: Some Pics
lovezebs Yes, the SG pied is my favourite. Especially, this cock in the photo. His mask is such a deep orange colour.
The weather is fine. 24 Celsius, no wind, no clouds. Just what you would expect on pre-spring Cape Town day. Birds are starting to get exited, as it is warming up nicely.
Don't know what we are going to do for water, as we had very little rain during the winter.

I could send you some rain today
Although we've had a fairly dry Summer, we are making up for it today.
Temp just dropped down to 5c, and although it's 8:55 in the morning, it's so gloomy, have to have lights on.
Are they going to do roll backs on water as well as electricity now
?

No, they will put in water restrictions. No water hoses allowed between 7h00 and 19H00, no automatic sprinkling systems allowed etc. Our power has been stable for the last couple of weeks.

Well, at least they won't turn the water off, and that's a blessing.
I Remember back home, when there were water shortages, they would give you a warning over the radio, and everyone would fill up buckets of water, or your bathtub or whatever, because they would turn off the water for a period of time.
Kids were forever encouraged to "save on every drop".
That was a long, long time ago, it's funny how these memories pop back.
Glad to hear that power has been stable.
We're down to 4c, and rain still coming down. I'm considering starting some plans on paper for an Ark.....

Re: Some Pics
I see that in this attached photo that the grassfinch has a distinctive kink in the tail feathers. This means that they have eggs or babies, but this such a bad pair, as soon as I go near their nest they abandon the eggs / babies.

No worries, I don't think you'll be jogging close to any nests any time soon
.
I still have my two boys (in seperate flights, seeing as they hate each other) and haven't found any girls for them. One I'm pretty sure is aging out anyway, and is quite happy with the two Cordon girls preening him. Two pretty little blue girlfriends, no nesting duties, no demands, just LOVE, lol.

Hard to tell from the photo but is that a Peter's or a Rosie cock in that first shot?

Re: Some Pics
saulosirds Peter's Twinspot. They are very pretty, but difficult to breed in a winter rainfall area. Rain stimulates them to breed, but only in summer. I heard that some people stimulate them by put a sprayer on every day. If they can they will live almost exclusively off live food.
