Berry Treat Suet okay for caged finches?

Post by Babs _Owner » Fri Aug 21, 2015 7:54 pm

I've got 7 hatchlings that all hatched a day apart. And the little ones are now starting to fall behind.

In addition to the seeds, vitamins, mashed eggs swiss chard, millet and cucumber I give them. I really need something to help out the exhausted parents.

Anyone ever feed outdoor Berry Treat Suet for their flight cage finches? Its for outdoor feeders. But its loaded with honey, milo wheat, corn, millet sunflowerseeds (crushed). Its in a big block and sticky. Just got it from the garden center.

Its called Natures Song Berry Treat Suet. Think its safe?

I don't believe that the suet block is a good idea for indoor birds.
Their seed mix has enough fatty seeds in there, and the eggs offer all the protein etc that they need. With different greens rounding off the diet, the actual 'diet', is fine.

Three Societies, should not have any problems feeding seven babies.

What you are probably seeing, is that the chicks that are six or seven days older, are the loudest beggers, with the biggest mouths. So they are pushing the youngest ones out of the way, and yelling the loudest. So, they get fed the most, and probably the most often.

Personally, I would take the younger chickies out, supplement feed them, then put them back in the nest, to help them catch up. That's 'me', and I'm not certain how comfortable you feel with doing this.

I've never used these suet blocks for caged birds. They are high in fat (suet), which is good for wild birds in the winter, but I don't know that so much fat would be good for caged birds. Instead, I'd just make sure the parents never run out of egg food, you probably will need to replenish it several times a day. Egg has the high protein content you need for growth of the babies.

Elana has given a good suggestion, to take out the littlest babies and supplement feed them. The biggest ones usually are the piggies, who demand more food. However, good parents will make sure that every baby gets fed.

If they are alive by tomorrow morning, I will be supplement feeding them. They might be losing the "FEED ME FEED ME" battle.

Yeah I was just sitting here all day staring at this block of sticky stuff and pondering it all day while I was working. Well, out the block goes to the crows tomorrow.

Well at least it wont be wasted :d

LOL you crack me up!! Because when I went to look for the formula an hour ago, I noticed the formula was the ONE item forgotten on the list.
Remember I've been grossly sick for 10 days or so. Brain went *poof*

Pet store is closed......Fear not Elana, I've keep the light on (its 9pm here) and the parents are STILL feeding them. Thank goodness!

Ill get it early in the morning :)

Give those parents loads of egg and spray millet, keep 'em working overtime... crack the whip. If anybody mentions Union, threaten them with the crow outside... :YMDEVIL:

You betcha! Its unreal how many boiled chicken eggs 4 adult finches can eat while feeding hatchlings. I think they are going to be up to 2 chicken eggs a day per cage. I keep fresh millet on the sides of the cage every morning and what they dont eat off that sprig that day, I sprinkle on top of their salads the next day.
