avtually one of the birds that has the problems is a cock bird and he always seemed like he had a really quite almost scratchy singing voice he was kept away from my other birds for about a month and was healthy and fine so I put him in with the others do you think he could of carried them in ?wildbird wrote: Don't know what to tell you about scatt except that it is a type of insecticide, but given in the correct amount, should not hurt the birds. If it is a respiratory infection and not air sac mites, I don't know if it will have an adverse effect on the birds. It doesn't seem that your birds would have gotten air sac mites unless you brought a new one in that had them. I don't think they just appear without being introduced by another bird.

Re: Canarys breathing problems
It's possible. Birds can carry a low level of mites that does not become obvious until they are stressed or weakened such as the damp conditions that you mentioned. You will need to treat all of your birds. One drop of Scatt on each. Re-treat after 21 days.
Scatt works well, but if you have a large number of birds a water soluble form of Ivermectin would be easier for you and less stressful for them.

If he had mites, I would think you would see more signs than just a scratchy voice, like coughing or sneezing, excessive beak wiping and general loss of condition, not singing at all. Guess I am just not convinced that it is mites, but I hope that whatever you decide to do, they will get better soon.

Wishing them all the best. I really hope they all get better for you. I would offer them some heat in some way or another.

debbie276 Hi Debbie. The moxidectin that we get in South Africa is water soluble. I included a picture.
