Almost grown up.

Post by kyle » Fri Sep 11, 2015 7:16 pm

All the chicks have grown up. They are coming to the end of their molt. Strange how siblings from the same nest can finish their molt a month apart. The girls were all ahead of the boys by a month. Now I have 6 young goulds for sale. There is a bird mart coming next month in my area and I think I will sell them there. I don't like the idea of having strangers come to the house and I'm concerned about the type of people that will take the birds. It's a work of love admittedly but still a lot of time involved and it would be reassuring to know that they will be well cared for.

Beautiful babies Kyle.
Some of them are not quite finished molting by the looks of things. I've also found, that most of the girls seem to start and finish molting before the boys. It's wierd.

Elana, Debbie, kelly thank you. It feels good to see them all colour up and become healthy adults. I'm wondering how most small breeders prefer to sell their birds? Through contacts or internet or bird shows?

You could advertise on free sites like kijiji, or whatever you have in your area, check with your local Pet Shops, find out when and where there are bird fairs in your vicinity, word of mouth through your local bird clubs, and advertise on here.

Babs, me too! Lol. Certainly would feel great to know they had a good home. So funny the finches usually scatter when I'm taking pictures of them. But the (tangerine) yellow back thinks that he's a supermodel and got to get in every shot.

Some of the members here prefer to sell to people on this forum. Have you posted an ad in the Marketplace here? When you sell through Kijiji, pet shops or bird marts, you have no idea of what kind of home they will have and whether the people know anything about keeping and caring for birds. I would have to screen everyone I didn't know.

Madcat, first time parents laid 3 clutches. The first clutch they didn't brood the second clutch they didn't sit at night, so I fostered the eggs and 2 eggs hatched. Their 3 clutch they were successful and raised 4 chicks. That was my first year breeding goulds. Now I have 6 pampered youngsters to find homes for.

Your Yellow Head male is gorgeous. What color breast has he got? He looks to be SF Pastel so I would guess White Breast or Lilac Breast?

Your little 'photo hog :-D' boy, is really lovely. Don't know why I'd thought he was one if your adults.

You're not by any chance bringing over to Alberta, to show him the sights, are you? I wouldn't mind at all, if you happened to accidentally forget him at my house.... :-D :-D :-D
