Re: Spring is in the air...
lovezebs You know, that is something to look into. The Department of Agriculture regulates all plant and animal material, whether it is a live bird or a live egg, so they probably wouldn't allow it without quarantine, and then the eggs would hatch in the quarantine station! Since I've heard that they don't always give the best of care to the live birds, I doubt they would bother with some hatchlings.

For those who might want to grow this grass themselves, I googled South African winter grass, and it is Poa annua, common name annual bluegrass. I imagine you can get seed of annual bluegrass in the U.S. and Canada.

I wonder if eggs would be included in this. If they are as yet not incubated, are the technically alive?

lovezebs They are still regarded as an animal product, so I'll have to check into the regulations on that--after our bird show is over, as that is taking most of my time this week.

I can tell you that because of the Avian Flu no uncooked poultry products - including eggs - are allowed to cross from the United States into Canada without quarantine and likely visa versa. (this seems to have been extended to all birds.) I can`t imagine it would be otherwise from any other country with bird flu. Therefore, since at least some of the other avian diseases can be passed from parent to embryo/egg, I would expect eggs would have to be quarantined.

Re: Spring is in the air...
Yes, Spring is in the air and it considerably warmer, but there is always 1 or 2 rainy / cloudy days per week. 26 Celsius the one day and 16 Celsius for 2 days and then back to high temps. The birds doesn't seem to mind and just wants to breed, but I want to remove all the covers from my aviary. (I have removed part of the covers already on the weather side.)
Everyday I give my birds some milk thistle, chickweed, spinach and seed grasses. That should really put them in the mood.

Elana, it would be pretty cool if we could ship eggs over to you. It's such a pity though about all the restrictions. The world is getting more and more paranoid but I suppose there are good enough reasons for it. Some idiots petrol bombed a bus last night close to where I live, killing 2 people and injuring about 11 others. No reason yet why they did it. Crazy and scary
If I ever come over to Canada, I will see if I can smuggle some birdies over for you. That article you posted gave me some good ideas, hahahaha

Oh Sweetie, what a terrible thing to happen. I'm sorry that the craziness of our world has come so close to you and yours.
I am sitting here, just shaking my head, wishing that there was some way, to share the tranquility and beauty of our hobby with hearts so filled with hatered and destruction.
Please be careful, and stay safe.

Thanks Elana, I appreciate it. I wish the anger in the world would dissipate. So many unhappy people
But I am still full of positivity and hope for our planet. Our beautiful birds are just one of the many great things to fight for

Fight the good fight, and keep the faith, eh?
Yes, there is a lot of discontent and unhappiness in our world, and sadly, it translates into hatered, which in the long run resolves nothing, and causes more misery and unhappiness.
I'm amazed, that people haven't figured that out yet.
Sadly, it is the innocents who suffer and pay the price in most cases. My heart goes out to those who were injured and the families of those who were killed.
On a lighter subject, if ever you do come to Canada, please equip yourself with a Trippled X DDD bra, and feel free to stuff it full of little feathered beauties,
.
Best wishes always.

Elana, I think I have the perfect idea. You know those outfits that you get for actors so that they look pregnant? Just imagine how many birds I could fit into that!!!!
"Oh no sir, that movement is just the baby kicking"
