After Downsizing, a Manageable and Spoiled Flock (pictures)

Post by Sheather » Tue Sep 22, 2015 5:08 pm

The flock has now been downsized to a manageable and very spoiled fourteen birds and a lot of fellow birdkeepers have been made very happy with those who did not stay. A lot of the finches went to a large nursing home aviary where they will surely make many new people happy while the others went to private owners including people wanting just a few pets as well as other hobbyists. I know they will all be in good hands.

We've now got our young teil, Freddy...

Who now bunks with his closest pal, our tame parakeet Sam,

as well as two other not hand-tamed budgerigars, Sydney and his bestest best friend, King Arthur, the original budgie I found lost outdoors a little over a year ago. I've got a new giant stand-alone flight cage on order for these guys since a 30 x 18 inch cage is a bit crowded - especially since they've gotten a bunch of new toys this week. They will be very very happy little guys now that they will get more undivided attention. Freddy is picking up bits and pieces of all the other bird's calls and whistles he hears us do. He's actually already started talking to the budgies in their own calls, which is quite neat. They're all good friends.

We have teenage Dilly and Dally the Diamond doves, who are eating on their own now.

Image

Trixie and Tango, the orange-cheeked waxbills.

Image

Sparky, a 4 month old male ringneck...

Image

Weaver and Sierra, yearling canaries...

Image

And a nice trio of society finches - my old favorite, Apollo, his mate Cirrus, and Claire, a lovely albino crested hen who has joined the pair without any problem.

Image

The only possible new additions now would be if the canaries have chicks, or if I decide Sparky would be happiest with a mate, I'll see how he does when he is an adult. I would then consider another tame dove to keep him company. For now, however, fourteen is a nice number.

Love that a number of the finches went to a nursing home aviary! They will be happy, and think of the joy they will bring to the residents--perfect! Sounds like you have done a great job downsizing, love the photos of those who remain.

I love the idea of the Nursing Home finches. A friend took me to a nursing home that he had been to a week before, visiting a friend of his. When he saw the aviary, he said he thought of me. I had been talking about getting finches for a long while before he saw this aviary. We went there on our lunch hour from work, and that pretty much sealed the deal for me. I stopped by a PetSmart that was closing and moving to a new location. I purchased my first two Society Finches (I purchased two and they gave me four more for free)....they knew more than I did at the time! The rest is history... I still think about that aviary and how much joy it brought to the folks living there.

I commend you for your choices of the "adoption" of your birds. You are spreading the love...... =D>

That's great that you have supplied a nursing home. I used to sell to a guy that put aviaries in homes and offices years ago. Always made me happy knowing where they were going.
Birds look great, you'll enjoy the little extra free time you have now.
best of luck
