Companion for Strawberry male?

Post by Pukasand » Wed Jan 07, 2009 6:18 pm

What can I put in to 'buddy' with a lone Strawbery male? Everyone I put in fights. He's such a sweet bird with a wonderful song. I hate to see him all alone. He's been with canaries and Zebras. Could he get along with a Cordon Bleu and if so, what sex? (If I am lucky enough to get some baby Bleus) Or, should I get a different species altogether for him? I was holding out trying to find a female Strawberry, but they are almost nonexistant anymore. I just dont want him to be all alone, and I dont like to see him sitting on the perch all day afraid to eat/drink because of bully birds. Any suggestions anyone? :?

The very first Strawberry I ever had was a male. He came in a group of birds that I bought. His best friend in the group was a Cordon Bleu hen. They loved each other. They are both pretty passive birds so one should work for you. Also one of the small waxbills would be a good buddy for him including the Goldbreasts, Red Ears or Orange Cheeks. Be careful with the Waxbills though as they can interbreed. Good luck!!

He and I both thank you, so much, BirdCrazy. :) Hopefully, my Bleu chick(s) will survive and he'll have a buddy. I'll let you know. Meanwhile, the search is forever on for a Strawberry female. [-o<

I just got a female strawberry who lost her mate when she was at the petshop. When i brought her home, her and my female gouldian became close friends and cuddled togaether at night. and followed each other around the cage.

Dont know if that will be happening, lol. I stayed up there for a few months with a friend and her husband but then she had orders to move to California, i did enjoy my stay though. I tried hard to find ppl with finches in Norfolk and had no luck, i loved that one petshop, i think it was called Pet Paradise, oh yeah and i loved Animal Jungle. I got a pair of goulds there for $80.

i had a strawberry male finch who lost his mate so i bought him a finch with the red stripe across the eye, i forgot the name of this type of finch, anyways that got along great for many years cuddled lots but never breed. When the strawberry male died{ he lived a long life} the little finch i had with him is now being fostered by 2 star finches and they all get along together. The stars are a mated pair so they dont let the widow finch get to close , but at least she has company.

now i have removed the nest the male star is trying to build a nest out of a cleaned off piece of millet. He hauls it up from the bottom of the cage to on top of a bunch of artificial greenery, i think hes the one that really wants a family, i just hope my female will take a rest and ignore him.

Strawberries should be bred

Post by Nipper06 » Tue Jan 13, 2009 12:20 am

Those of you with single Strawberry Finches should make every effort to get together and make an arrangement to breed them. They are really dying out in aviculture lately and new imports seems unlikely. If people don't breed, Strawberries and other rare finches will be a thing of the past!
