First RFPF's of Spring
I checked today, my first Red Faced Parrot Finch babies this Spring has hatched. Yes, I have couple of clutches of diamond firetails, canary babies, long tail grassfinch babies, and a multitude of Bengalese that happened by accident, but the Parrotfinches are my passion. My gouldians drive me to distraction, I have about 6 nests for the 2 pairs, and they can't decide which nests to use. The one gouldian cock is a bit too young for breeding still, but hopefully he will mature quickly. I also put 2 pairs of RFP finches in their own aviary, with 4 nestboxes. They promptly built nest all four of the nestboxes, and now it is wait and see for me.

Re: First RFPF's of Spring
Smurf Thx Padraic. The bloody weather is just crazy at the moment. Today is a very nice 20 Celsius, but yesterday, it was 11 Celsius. It is quite annoying that it can't settle into a nice average Spring temperature of 22-25 Celsius like it used to do in the past in spring. I don't want to loose birds due to cold.

We had 9 degrees this morning. So far three canary chicks and a masked lovebird did not survive.
Last week we were in the 30-ies...

Good luck and keep us posted! Hope the temps level out for you. I definitely relate to what you are talking about. It is the hardest thing to deal with an outdoor aviary. We are heading into fall/winter here in Texas. Rainy cool nights, warming up in the daytime, then dropping again.....makes me nervous!!!

I cant wait to see pictures of the RFP finch babies! Think positive! Good news in the future! They built their nests ASAP, that HAS to be a good sign!

Re: First RFPF's of Spring
Good start to the season. Look forward to seeing those little babies with bright blue mouth guides. Loves them at that stage.
My birds are still all in a full very heavy moult.
I can sympathise with the weather changes... it was so promising and then bam it brings in a chilly cold front. Lost a new split blue gouldian the other day with the sudden change in weather or something. Was perfectly healthy the day before.

monotwine I spoke too soon. I looked inside the RTPF nest and it looks like there are 2 dis eggs and 1 well-fed chick. Maybe just maybe there is a 2nd chick.

Re: First RFPF's of Spring
monotwine And today, the chick is dead, still with food in the crop. A classic example of parrotfinches that leave the babies alone at night too soon. If they are a few than they keep each other warm, but a single chick without any feathers doesn't have much chance to keep alive alone at night.
