Girls, lol, we're talking about a PARROT FINCH here !!!
Have you ever seen Parrot Finches bathe ??? :?

I don't have a picture of my new boy 'Merlin' (just came to me this minute) bathing, but I have pictures of Parrot Finches post bath.

I wasn't going to use any meds in bath water. I used SCAT, one drop on back of neck, and I rubbed it into the skin (so now both he and I should be ok for 14 days in regards to mites (if there were any mites to begin with, on him, not on me).

I have had a colony of pfinches... some do not bathe like yours do.

just a note, once you Scatt or topically treat your birds with a mite preventative....avoid giving them baths (water cups too but only is your use tubes as well) for about 2 to 3 days after treatment.

Lovely pied. He doesn't actually look too bad if he is just going through his normal moult. Mine look like that and worse at the moment. They just about drop their whole tails when at their peak of moulting.

Due to this bird coming from a pet store - even if you knew it came from Bear originally, the usual treatments are best to prevent any unwelcomed guests arriving from pet shop with your lovely boy.

I have also found that scatt does not treat feather mites. You get the mites that live off blood like scaley mites, but feather mites feed off feathers and don't come into contact with the treatment. In which case it is best to spray them down or add the treatment to their bathing water. However it is easy enough to see if your bird has feather mites. Hold up to light, spread their wings gently and if you see any abnormal clumps of eggs near the base of the feathers or moving lice and mites, then you know what you dealing with.

I've had pigeons and Gouldian come to me with feather mites. Only dusting them topically or spraying them down eventually killed off mites.

lovezebs This is the bird that Bigbear said had a 2014 ring? If this is the same bird, it is only 1 year + old. Still at his prime.

As far as a spray for mites... AIL (Avian Insect Liquidator) works well, avoid the sprays you buy in the pets stores or do not drench the bird heavily with them. I hear several folks say they have had their birds show side effects from heavily soaking the birds. More is not necessarily better regarding pesticides.

Hi All and thanks for responses.

This pretty fellow (Merlin), has had several owners. I picked him up at my Pet Shop.
*Before that, he very briefly (a couple of weeks or so) stayed with Big Bear.
*Before that, he lived for about six months with another lady, that I've recently met. She said, that she did the whole new bird treatment, deworming, spraying, treating for everything under the sun.
*And before that, he lived with some other people, (don't know for how long), who gave up their birds, because they could no longer care for them.

God only knows, what he went through prior to that, poor little guy.

Marius, he does not have a dated band on him, just a couple of colour rings, so I have no idea how old he really is.

Our friend Smurf, thought (from the picture) that his tail looked like it might have feather mites. At this point, I honestly don't know. He might just be stuck in molt due to the stresses associated with so many different owners and moves and turmoil in his life.

I am trully hoping, that with a good diet, heat, and stability, he will grow a lovely new tail and coat in due time.

He is a lovely little bird, and whether young or older, deserves a good life. If he's young enough to breed, great ; if not, then so be it. I enjoy watching him, enjoying his life :-).

cindy

Thanks Cindy.

I didn't know that he shouldn't bathe for several days after a SCAT treatment. Anyway, I treated him on Friday, and he had his big bath yesterday, so hopefully all will be well. Not even certain if mites were even a problem, might be just stuck in molt because of too many owners and too many moves in too short a time.

I'm surprised, that you PF's don't bath heavily. My guys, get absolutely drenched, several times a day (given the opportunity). They literally come out looking like drowned rats. Other than my Societies, I've never seen any birds enjoy their baths as much and as often.

Funny thing is, is that many of my other species, have picked up these bathing habits, from just watching them :-).

lovezebs You have well in hand by the sounds of it and your new boy will thrive as do your other birds. I prefer to be more cautious with over treating PF's for mites and stuff anyhow. They are the one species that doesn't tolerate too much ivermectin and get toxic shock from it as mentioned by cindy.

Holding thumbs with all the new food and buddies he will quickly become a new happy handsome addition to your flock.

I use the ivermectin 1% as directed by my vet, it is drawn out of a vial type container with a syringe... one small drop onto the bare skin of the bird, never had any bad side effects from it. I use it as instructed by my avian vet my daughter works for. I do this as a preventative 1 drop for one dose for a total of 3 doses each dose 14 days apart.... some people have a tendency to think that they will eliminate the quicker if they double dose with 2 even three drops...that is where you can get into issues of seeing side effects.

A very simple way to find out if you have feather mites is to hang a white sheet over the back and sides of you cage at night. Feather mites feed and leave the host and hide in nooks and crannies of cages and the environment, they come out mainly at night to feed, hiding during the day. If you see you have red blood dots and streaks on the white sheet you likely have feather mites. Do this for a coupe of nights to confirm.

Scaly beak and leg mites burrow under the skin and remain on the body and are usually passed from bird to bird with close contact, example nesting, parents to young in the nest. Scaly mites can be on your bird for 6 months to a year before seeing any visible signs, I do preventatives as my vet recommends when birds are in quarantine to eliminate any issues later on, and that includes ASM.
