First Same-Sex Couple!

Post by MiaCarter » Mon Oct 12, 2015 10:11 am

Much to my surprise, I've got my very first same sex couple with babies!

It's quite a curious pairing - one is Squeeper's daughter Molly, who's only a couple months old. And she paired up with an older zebra hen Bentlee from another flight.

Neither has bred before.

It was a rather curious situation, as I open up the cages during the days and they can fly about as they like. When I'm breeding, I typically close down a cage so I can control who mates and I can prevent others from coming in and disturbing the nest and babies.

I'd given up with breeding Bentlee, assuming she just wasn't ready. I kept finding eggs on the floor and she wasn't acting nesty at all.
So I took her cage off lock down. I was hanging out in the bird room and I saw her make a bee-line for another cage, where she proceeded to comandeer a freshley-cleaned nest, laid an egg and immediately started sitting.

By the end of the afternoon, the little juvenile Molly had joined her in the nest and that was that! (Curiously, I'd never seen these two ever really interact before so very random!)

They incubated together and now, they've got 3 little ones, whom they're feeding together like champs! I was a bit worried, as neither has had babies and Molly is quite young.

It's a not-so-traditional arrangement. But they seem quite content, as do their babies.

It's so darn cute, my two little mamas!
I've got to snap a photo of them in their nest. They're so cute, cuddled up together and always preening each other.

Sounds like a wonderful arrangement. Any ideas who the father might be? Or was it in vitro fertilization ? :-)

lovezebs - Indeed! The dad was one of Molly Sue's bio sons. pied NG, split to CFW with fawn genes in there too.

I'm just so surprised the little one Molly hopped in there and how quickly they've become the best of friends, taking turns incubating and tending to the babies. They've definitely found a nice groove!
