That's so funny because the guys at the pet shop insisted that it was a female...I had my doubts which is why I asked

How do you tell males from females in this trait (hope I'm using the term correctly)

Blue band around head. Dark yellow underneath. Males colors are deeper

In this particular case the grey head is a dead giveaway. In a yellow bodied bird they can not produce the color black so if it was a hen or DF male the head would be white. SF Pastel means it only has one pastel gene so the black color turns to grey.
Also the blue around the mask color, the darker yellow belly and the long tail wires.

Thanks debbie, so if I wanted a female bird with the same colouration what would I have to look for ?

The pet shop said to come in and exchange it and I know that they had about 15 birds with the same look....soooo much to learn !!!

For a hen look for a white head, pale yellow belly and short tail wires

Thanks for the info debbie, but this was the one we eventually picked...

I am 99.9% sure it's a female, but based on the experience with my other 'female' I still need confirmation from you guys.

This is the other male that I bought together with the BH.WB.SF Pastel male

Oh and of course I couldn't give up the BH.WB.SF Pastel male....so I kept him....Gouldian count...3
