Gouldian eggs???

Post by slwatson » Mon Oct 12, 2015 10:55 am

A couple of weeks ago, I placed two gouldian pairs in their own breedings cage with their own nests. Then my family and I went out of town this past weekend, and when we got back, my blue back female and yellow back male had laid one egg. Without touching it, I looked at it and it seems to be cracked :( , and neither of the parents are sitting much at all. If it does indeed have a crack, I'm thinking about taking it out to see if they'll try again. Then if they don't sit or pay much attention to any eggs they lay, I might see if I can use some societies to sit, since they did such a fantastic job with their babies.

My other pair of gouldians have been going in and out of their nest, and at least one is sitting most of the time. I haven't checked the nest yet, because there's almost always one inside, but I might take a little peek today.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed! The second pair bonded when they were in the flight cage, but the first pair have never seemed that interested. I was shocked to see that egg, even if it is cracked.

If you have one sitting in the nest all the time, bets are that they have eggs in there. I would leave them and their nests alone. You don't want to disturb them on their first clutch.

Regarding the cracked egg...
Are you one hundred percent sure that it's cracked? If not, I would leave it in the nest and let them do what comes naturally. If the egg is no good, they will either eat it or tip it out of the nest.

If I were you, I would let the Gouldians raise their own kids. Once they get going, they are excellent parents, and it is much better for the chicks to be raised by their own parents in the long run.

Good luck.

Ok..I'll leave the second pair alone, but I'm just dying to see!

The egg for the first pair looks like it's indented in one spot, like they stepped on it. I'm giving the female plenty of calcium, so the shell should be fairly strong. I want them to raise their own chicks, but they both seem so clueless. The male is pretty young, which could be the problem, but the other pair are so diligent already about sitting. These two spend most of their time out eating and sitting on the perch when they should be taking care of their egg! Stinkers! And I could possibly get a silver out of them if they'll do it :D

They should not sit till there are about 4 eggs so give them time to get that many.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that you didn't know about them only beginning to incubate after their clutch is almost completed.
Thank goodness for our Debbie.

This is actually a good thing, because if the eggs hatch too far apart, the size difference between the chicks is too great, and often the smallest will either not get fed enough, or will get squished by their older sibs.

That makes sense! I noticed yesterday the yellow and blue pair spent more time in the nest, so hopefully they've laid more eggs :)

Got an update on the gouldian eggs. I had to peek last night Elana, so don't be mad :O3 The nests are on the outside of the cage with a peek-a-boo door on top, and I made sure the adults were out. :D

My blue and yellow pair now have three, my second pair now have four, and...I had put an owl pair together just to see if they were compatible around the same time, and they now have two eggs, even though I haven't seen them act interested in one another at all :-O They must be very covert with their mating!

Now to see if they hatch [-o<

I didn't think you would really be mad  I think you told me to not disturb them, since it was their first clutch. I was worried they wouldn't like their new cages enough to breed, but they seem to enjoy them just fine!

Thanks! I left them alone last night and didn't peak, but I did notice the female gouldian in my second pair has started sitting at night, and the female blue gouldian hasn't yet....I think she's still laying eggs. I can't tell with the owls. I'm not sure what to look for when owls start laying eggs.

The blue goudian is next to sit then? I am completely at a loss to tell you what the owl finches will do next. Would be very interesting to find out! How are the owls behaving?
