Baby Societies
About 2 months ago one of my 3 male finches died (2 society, 1 spice) so I decided to get another finch or two and next thing you know, I have upgraded my cage and added 3 silverbills (2 African, 1 Indian, I think they are 1 female, 2 male) and added just one society finch who happened to be female.
My lone male society was ecstatic, he's about 8 or 9 years old and he started building a nest and then came eggs and fast forward to today. Two chicks were born on October 4 and today they are 14 days old. Dad society is doing most of the work but the other Spice finch and the mom help out as well. There's another nest with about 5 eggs in it that are being tended by Spice and Societies but they could be Silverbill eggs as I saw the female Silverbill in egg-laying mode a few weeks ago. Seems like they should have hatched by now but I'll keep watch.
Anyway, just wanted to share some photos, they're not great, you know how finches are when you bring something scary near the cage like a camera (actually it's only my newly acquired finches that are so scared) but you can see the two babies laying down in the nest. Guessing they'll fledge next week.
I've been reading this forum for awhile, immensely helpful with the breeding process, thank you!

Re: Baby Societies
Are your societies all brown in color? If not, those chicks look to be either spice chicks, silverbills, or hybrids.

Re: Baby Societies
The male society is brown, female is fawn. Spice finch is male so it's possible but the societies were coupled up pretty quickly. It's also possible they're Silverbills. I haven't seen any cross coupling. Will know soon!!Sheather wrote: Are your societies all brown in color? If not, those chicks look to be either spice chicks, silverbills, or hybrids.![]()

Whatever they are, they are adorable (as all babies).
I'm curious to know who they will look like once they fledge and molt
Keep them pictures coming

Re: Baby Finches
I stand corrected!!! Last night one of the babies came out of the nest, it may be ready to fledge but it woke me up at midnight because all the birds were fluttering around in the cage. I turned the light on and the baby was on the floor of the cage, perfectly healthy. Picked it up and it is all dark with a white swipe on the tail, JUST like my silverbills, ooops. That would explain why the silverbills are always hanging out over the nest. So confusing these birds! Did not get a photo and I put the baby back in the nest where it is this morning. Both babies are still healthy, their foster parents feeding them. Can't wait to be able to show photos!

Can't wait for pictures.
They sure fooled you didn't they? LOL !
When you have Societies in the same flight with nesting couples (even of another species), they will take over, nest, babies and all. They will chase away the actual parents (the only time I've seen Societies look threatening).

Re: Baby Finches
SO..... this morning I only saw one baby in the nest so I decided to check it out. Took the little guy out of the nest, NO other baby. Hmmmm. So I took the other nest out (FULL of eggs, need to have some "responsible parenthood" lectures soon), no baby. Very puzzling. DUH, blonde moment. I have 3 adult silverbills. I count my silverbills, FOUR. One already fledged! I work full-time so I am not home to watch as much as I'd like. Later I saw this fledged baby with it's mouth open, waiting for food. How long do the "parents" feed it outside the nest before it's on it's own?
Here are pictures of both babies. The fledged one (last photo) is definitely more mature.

I might have to revamp my cage situation so I can do some species separation! Long ago I had a pair of Cordon Blues that were laying eggs. Chicks hatched and mom tossed them all. Laid eggs again, chicks hatched, mom tossed. That's how I learned about and first got societies, thinking they might step in and help but the female CB ended up dying one day so I just stuck with males after that. Until recently.....
