An eventful and stressful, but good mart!

Post by finchmix22 » Mon Oct 19, 2015 12:55 pm

As you all know, I have been significantly downsizing my finch flock. My last adventure in breeding and selling my babies was our local bird mart. While I sold all my flock, but ten finches, mostly to forum members, I had a difficult time letting go to them at the mart.

The new owners were very excited to have their new finches; HOWEVER, one woman tried to add a canary and dove to the small acrylic cage she had one of my favorite owl pairs within. You guessed it, the male escaped into the rafters of a twenty foot ceiling for most of the day!! I was beside myself! I couldn't hold in my grief anymore and began tearing up and feeling such a sense of loss and grief about letting go of my finches.

Thanks to Cheryl and Sally and a few other great local breeders and bird club members, I was comforted and everyone helped me keep track of the fawn owl cock that escaped. The new owner felt bad and I sold her another pair at half price, taking the remaining mate of the fawn cock in the hope we would catch her mate. And, thank God, Cheryl caught that little boy, called "Mewto" at the very end of the day. The poor little guy was exhausted, hungry and thirsty. Plus, his mate, "Gilfy" was calling to him while he was sitting in the rafters, perched, but watching his mate most of the day.

Because I am attached to this pair and was sad to let go of all my finches and the fact that three other owners birds got loose at the mart and were flying around, out of reach, I stood guard at the mart doors!! People who were not breeders kept coming in and out the doors, just below my escaped owl finch, who was perched in the rafters and watching his mate below and the other finches kept flying nearby. These people were potential customers and did not realize what an owner of a beloved finch or any lost bird felt.
I kept saying "Shut the door, Loose birds!" I just knew, if people weren't careful, not only would my precious fawn owl, Mewto be lost and probably would die, but so would the other escaped birds. I don't know if they caught the escaped CFW zebra, Rosie Bourke, and one other finch. Yet, I still feel such sadness that anyone would have to leave that mart with out their lost birds. If at all possible, the bird club members help to catch any escapees until they must leave the facility for the other events to continue.

Well, at the end of the day, imagine my joy when Cheryl caught my beloved Mewto!! If that wasn't enough, another person was wanting to buy one of my owl pairs. She decided to take Mewto and Gilfy, and let them both have a good rest to recover from their traumatic day! God bless her and them too. Then, I felt much more at peace and started to calm down, somewhat. I still feel sad and had some tearful bouts as I remembered my babies and the other birds I've lost over the years. Yet, I felt supported and comforted by my fellow bird lovers, so that helped so much!

Now, I can relax and focus on my health and getting my two teenagers out of high school and into college. OMG! They grow up so fast. :!:

Oh Deborah, my goodness.....
It sounds like an extremely stressful day. As if it wasn't hard enough to deal with parting with your finches, and then this happens.

I'm glad everything sorted itself out in the end.

So are you now officially 'finchless'?

What an adventure at the birdshow with all the escapees! I know the whole situation is very bittersweet. But now that free time can be quality time for family and other fun craziness!

Let everyone know how you are!

We had happy endings for all the escapees this time! The Zebra was caught during the mart, Deborah's Owl was recaptured near the end of the day, and the Bourke's was caught after all the other vendors had left for the day, just before we had to close the doors. The fourth bird, another Owl, remained free.

I tried to catch it yesterday morning, but had to give up when the building had to be locked again. I went back this morning, and though I was not successful, one of the conference center employees was able to catch her. Her new owner is coming to pick her up tomorrow, as I felt she needed a day of NV powder to recover. To be perfectly honest, I am getting a bit tired of giving up several days after the marts to catching birds for people. This happens every mart, and since I live the closest to the conference center, it falls on me. I am very tempted in future to tell people they will have to make the drive back themselves, that I am no longer going to do it. What I am afraid of is that the people will not make the effort, the conference center is going to get tired of the loose/dead birds, and they are going to cancel our contract. They have a dinner event scheduled in that room tonight, I'm sure they didn't want a loose bird pooping on people's dinner plates!

This is one of the down sides to having a mart. We arranged to have a transfer room available, and some vendors used it, but most did not, and that is unfortunate, as a safe transfer room is the best way to move birds from one cage to another.

Unfortunately, we cannot keep the doors closed when birds are lost, it is a mart after all, and the whole point of it is getting customers in the door. All we can do is ask vendors and customers to be careful when transferring birds, to use bird-save containers. Most of the time, the birds stay up high anyway, as that is instinctive--go as high as possible to be safe.

We've lost two birds out of our avairy... both times thanks to my dad. The most recent was the other day when he was getting the water bowl out to give it a scrub and instead of tipping the water out first so he could make a quick exit, he tried to balance the bowl full of water out, took too long and one of our new fledglings legged it.

Needless to say, I was not a happy chappy with it all and the little kid never came back to the flock.

I can really feel your pain at the bird getting out and I am delighted that you managed to recover him and then eventually find him a new home.

Deborah, so glad you had a happy ending after such a stressful day! I don't think it ever gets easier selling birds and it especially doesn't help if one escapes. Really thrilled that Mewto was caught :)

I sold my first lot of homebred waxbills to a dealer on Saturday. 12 GB's and 2 fire finches. While I know he has good cliental (way better than your average pet shop), I still felt like a complete traitor leaving them there!!

It's silly how attached we get to these little birds :D

While I was at the mart a senegal got loose but was quickly rounded up. I'm really glad there was a happy ending to the story.

The transfer room sounds like a good idea. Maybe next time more people will use it.
