Yum bird soup..... Just kidding

I thought I had a plucker as well but apparently everyone is moulting. My young male was looking a tad scruffy as they all are but him more so. Turns out his little cheeks are colouring out. My little fledge with grey cheeks turned out to be male and they are coming in a very lovely shade of brownish orangish. His dad is my BC male so I've been really watching his colouring.

Babs

As you can see in the pictures above Babs, things are beginning to heal, but I think the eye is a write off (or almost a write off).

Oh that poor little gal. This must be happening at night or you would certainly see it. So frustrating....

You're lucky that you don't have a plucker, Trisha. Most especially a maniac homicidal PLUCKER.

If they're all molting, make sure you offer them eggs and some vitamins, along with veggies. When molting, they need that little bit of extra to grow all those pretty new feathers.

Hello All.

Update on little injured Zebra.
She's doing well, eating, drinking, flying around and bouncing here there and everywhere.

Still not sure about that eye though....

What do you think?

If you move something towards that eye does it seem like she is using it?

Poor little sweetheart..Glad she is getting better

Honestly, I've tried not to stress her too much by grabbing her to check things out. Just from observation, I can see that her injuries are healing. That eye however appears to be smaller than the other eye, possibly due to scar tissue on the eyelid. The eye itself, is shiny bright, but seems fixed.

Once things are completely healed, I will take her out of the flight and see if she has any sight on that side.

The problem with birds is once they start nasty behavior like this its hard to stop them. Its better to separate them. My two Zebrafinches are kept separate from my star finch because he;s a runt and weak. They;ve tried to attack him a number of times.

Surprisingly, tho, they talk to each other through the cages!

I would gladly seperate 'the Plucker', if I knew who it was. That's the problem, that whoevere he or she is, they are not acting out when I'm watching O:-) , when I'm not watching...

So far, I've separated the Societies into a different flight, so that they wouldn't become victims as well. There haven't been any new injuries in the last few days, and the last three patients, are recuperating in yet another flight.

So sorry to read about all this strife. Hope you figure out who the culprit is before anything more serious happens. Good luck! Glad the little girl is doing well.

When you do try and check on her sight, move something back and forth, and not towards her eye. If you create wind currents, the eye will feel it and the bird may react as if it sees. I would probably put her in a cage with one of your gentlest birds - perhaps one of the societies she was used to - and observe her reactions carefully. See how stressed she is. If she does have impaired vision, she might not be comfortable with as many birds, toys, plants etc around her.

No worries about this little chickie, she's as feisty as ever. I have seen her standing up to my male Canaries, without a flinch (maybe because she can't see how big they are), but she's no pushover.

I would pity any Society finchling that was to be her house mate..... :-S
