They are good eaters.
They like a finch seed diet and spray millet. Love LOVE hard boiled eggs and live meal worms ) so much so, that they really have a tendency to get fat , so that's something you have to watch carefully). They love greens and Orange slices, even bits of banana. They will try anything you offer them.
Absolutely love their baths, sometimes two or three times a day.
Courtship and breeding is rough, so you have to have a large flight, with places for the female to hide.

What kind of nesting material do the red throated parrot finches prefer? Is it coconut fibers? I had put some timothy hay in their cage, with a mix of a few other kinds, and I even put some in their nest box to just have them start. They let me know right away they DID NOT appreciate that, and they shoved it all out of the nest, AND out of the cage. Message received
So I put some coconut fibers in their cage, and they immediately started making a nice nest in the nest box.

Just bought a pair of parrot finches and read how much they love a bath. So I've fixed one permanently to the side of their flight cage. Within 60 seconds the pair of them were in there splashing about!
Strawberry finch, parsons finch, Green singer, cordon bleus, Gouldians, St Helena waxbills, Diamond Fire tails, owl finches, cut throats, parrot finches, zebra's, spice finch, hecks finch, bengelese finch, peach faced love birds, masked lovebirds, canaries, Java's, Bullfinch, Goldfinch and a pair of mandarin ducks

Ok...so I'm starting to think my red throated parrot finches do not like their nesting box. It's one of those plastic ones, the same thing I'm using with my gouldians. I'm planning on moving them to a large flight cage this weekend, but I think I should try a different nest. I bought the finches from KarenB, and she said she used a wicker nest. What do you use with yours? I don't know if it should be a wicker nest that you would typically see in a tree, or one that has the hood with an opening underneath.
