New to the forum

Post by Alabao15 » Fri Oct 23, 2015 4:07 pm

Hello to all, i posted this in the housing forum, but maybe I should've posted it here instead

I am new to the forum and would like some input if possible. I am building a house in which I designed an indoor aviary. The foot print is 8.6ft x 14ft and about 14ft tall, has a dirt floor and will be planted, it will have a solar tube above for lighting supplemented by full spectrum bulbs. My question is really for the following, I am thinking of incorporating a water feature (pond less stream) with various small cascades for the birds to drink and bathe in. I have met with a few contractors and they have given me suggestions that will help keep the water clean for the birds. Incorporating aquatic plants and establishing a colony of healthy bacteria to breakdown feces like a bio filter, I would also have the ability to refill the reservoir (approx. 200 gallons) periodically with fresh water. Does anyone have any success with a similar set-up?

I figure this is kind of what the birds encounter in the wild, water sources that have plants and fish. Please let me know if you can spot a potential health hazard that I have not mentioned a solution for above.

Thank you!!!!

Welcome to the Forum from Canada.

I am not sure if there is anyone on the Forum with such a setup. It sounds wonderful though.

What sort of Finches are you hoping to keep in your new aviary?

I hope someone with more aviary experience will chime in and be able to answer some of your questions. Do you have any pictures of the plans for your aviary, personally I would love to see it.

Good luck

Welcome to the forum :)
Sounds like a wonderful aviary! A few on here have tried water features and from what I remember they are a pain to keep clean, a few I think clogged from the seed hulls. None were on the scale your talking about though. Would love to hear about and see your progress.
best of luck

Thanks to all I'll definitely post pictures once I start the planting and preparing the water feature.

I'm so jealous. If I built that the water would be frozen by Halloween! Welcome to the forum and keep us updated with pics.

LOL, I think you're right, Elana. Still jealous, though. :D
