New Canary not singing
Howdy everyone. I have a quick question. My new Spanish Timbrado male doesn't sing. He's completely silent. Not even a chirp or peep. So, today I went on Amazon and got a CD of Canary songs. Will that help him to sing or did I just buy myself a new meditation CD?

Hi Layne.
First of all, how long have you had him?
Second of all, are you sure he's a male?
Third of all, how old is he?
Fourth of all, is he molting?
At times it takes a new bird a little bit of time, to get comfortable enough in a new environment to sing.
If the bird is a female by some miss chance, it will not sing.
If it's a very young bird, it might take it a while to figure out the singing.
Also, if he is by chance molting, or going Into molt, he will not sing until he's done with his molting.

Elana,
He's a he. I know that for sure. The breeder had him and his mate already to go at the bird mart. His mate cheeps a lot. I know he's not molting been looking for that. Both birds are a year old. So he might be young enough he hasn't found out he has voice. I read that playing music or canary songs will help him figure out what do do. I hope so. I love it when all my finches chime in and sing. It's just a wonderful feeling.

Hi Layne.
So he is a HE. That helps
.
He's not molting, ok. At times though males will stop singing before they actually begin molting. However, let's assume he's not molting.
He's not too young (at over a year). Males begin singing way before that.
You mentioned that his mate cheeps a lot, which makes me wonder......
Have you got them housed together by any chance ???

Re: New Canary not singing
They are housed together in a canary cage while they are in quarantine. Then I am moving them to the bird room to join the finches. He has started to make a trilling sound unlike the cheeping of the female.

That's a good start.
If you want him to really start singing, put them in seperate cages (preferably with female in another room, where he can hear but not see her).
By the way, playing Canary Songs to your boy, will help him pick up some ideas. You can go on the internet, and find all sorts of Canary songs on there to play for your fellow. Some on there are surprisingly good.
I had to resort to that, when my Luciano was the only Canary in the house and housed with Societies. He started to 'try' to mimic the Socie song, and it was absolutely awfull.
Now with his three sons to compete with, you can't hear yourself think in my kitchen. One of them (not sure who) has added a new sound to his singing, which is quite pleasant, and I haven't got a clue where he got that from. It's sort of a trooloo -loo trooloo-loo, which is quite sweet.
Good luck with your boy

No. He makes more chirping noises and sometimes trills. I am playing the CD for him.

Congratulations
.
Their songs are lovely, aren't they? He must hsve been at the end of his molt when you got him.
Right now I have my Luciano, and his three sons, singing up a storm. They get so loud sometimes, that I have to roar 'QUIET!' at times just to hear myself think

Re: New Canary not singing
Glad that he has started singing!!
I sold all of my canaries, except for the one male. I can't imagine my garden without his beautiful song in it. Whenever I go and talk to him, he answers back with a tune. It's really cute
